Language translations: Do you bother?

I'm curious on several levels..... but let's suffice to ask, do you translate your sites into other languages and if so, which ones do you feel are necessary, and if not.... why not?

quiet 10-30-2002 02:02 AM

nope. just don't give a damn.

mrthumbs 10-30-2002 02:04 AM

if you are targetting a specific country it plain logic to translate
a site to a local language.

Otherwise: if they cant speak fucking english they cant
handle creditcards.. so dont even bother.

quiet 10-30-2002 02:06 AM

actually, we get quite a few signups who don't speak english as a first language. they don't seem to have much trouble signing up regardless.

Brown Bear 10-30-2002 02:07 AM

It just aint worth it, maybe for German or Japanese, but couldn't be bothered.

English is the language of the net.

jennycards 10-30-2002 02:14 AM

We used to have a German translation of our site ... but traffic from Germany stayed on a low level so I finally decided to drop that translation.
Also I have the impression that users from Europe are not ready (yet) to use their credit card on-line ... and many of them don't even own a credit card.

This may be a bit off topic, but any foreign company worth its weight in gold simply hires a consulting firm to handle the language barrier for them.

I'm getting ready to send German,Japanese, most country's in Europe and China to a Dialer... there traffic am finding out is not worth very much to me.... of course about 90% of my traffic is USA anyways

fiveyes 10-30-2002 09:23 PM

I use the free service at www.worldlingo.com on the outside tour on one of my sites and about 5% of my traffic uses it. Their logo button for the translation looks professional, doesn't take up too much space on the page and I figure if it results in just sale, it's more than paid for itself...

Pornwolf 10-30-2002 10:45 PM

Thanks for the link Five Eyes. I could use something like that on a couple of my mainstream sites.

Indeed, and even the US doesn't speak proper English yet.. ;)

Languages are important.. analyze your traffic and where there is a market do a translation!

Send your foreign traffic to a dialer..

:thumbsup

All sites with more than a TGP or freesite content, I
translate to French, just because I'm a good Canadian.
That and those Quebecers are horny little pervs.
