The government can turn on your webcam to spy?

Was looking at some vids of laptop theives caught when the laptop owner used remote
software to turn on the webcam and took pics of the thieves using the computer.

He gave the cops the IP address and the crooks were busted.

How long before the government can turn on any webcam remotely?

RyuLion 09-10-2008 07:55 AM

sounds like there was a "just cause" to turn on the webcam..

fatfoo 09-10-2008 07:56 AM

Nope. But it might be a pain to cover the webcam for every rolling session. :1orglaugh

Fuck off, I already tried that!

candyflip 09-10-2008 08:29 AM

We have a little app installed on our Macbooks that does just this. I also installed something similar on my iPod. Hopefully I'll never have to use them, but just in case they are installed.

Yes they can.

They can also listen through your cellphone (among other things), even if you are not talking on it, if they wanted to ( and had subpeona/legal cause wink wink). Old college roomie is Homeland Security. Have heard about all this shit some time ago.

I always bust his balls about him Goose Stepping down Michigan Av.

Owner 09-10-2008 08:35 AM

they can already tap into your cell phone without a warrant and locate you with the gps.

Hell they already leave cars unlocked with the keys in them so they can watch people on the hidden cam and then disable the car a mile away to set them up... it makes for great reality tv

I crossed the border into Canada and got some extra security at the airline.
I noticed that I seemd to have to charge my cell phone everyday while there
even though I wasn't using it.

I actually turned the cell phone completely off with a full charge and
even though the phone was off the battery went dead in less than one day.

Since comming back to the states this never happened again.
I charged that phone and turned it off for a month and it still had a charge in it.

So, what happened in Canada?

Yep. Saw that on COPS.

You have to love how they warn you that if you do not stop they will taze you, or are reading you your rights while in the middle of tazing you already.

It's classic.

For some reason I always turn my webcam the other way when I don't use it. I remember spying on chicks' cams back on High School using a trojan horse :1orglaugh

Too bad if it's built in. Next laptop I buy, the webcam is getting covered with a bit of sticky tape.

(I bet someone's already thought of embedding webcams into monitors... won't be much longer before they're commonplace...)

rowan 09-11-2008 10:23 AM

Another thing that's "good" in the right hands but "bad" in the wrong... how long until laptops have inbuilt GPS receivers? Then they can phone home their loc on every boot, so if your laptop is stolen you can quickly locate it.

Or the govt can track you. :D

They already could.

MS software always 'calling home' for updates. Doing this, they have your IP. So, while they can't narrow you down to your home like a phone line on dial up. They still can triangulate you.
