That bitch JK Rowling won a landmark judgement in Court today. Some dude tried to make a Harry Potter Encyclopedia. He never published it. But she found out through some magic and she sued him for it. She said that it would possibly compete with her Harry Potter Encyclopedia, which doesn't even exist. But her legal fees are over $100,000. Have fun paying your fat cat lawyers you bitch.

She's worth billions..

Whatever. JKR is cool in that she has NOT been litigious at all, from what I understand, about kinky fanfic springing up all over with her characters and has even said she doesn't care as long as people aren't directly trying to entice kids to read it.

Doing some reading you are right she has actually not been sue crazy.. She had her own encyclopedia in the works and this dude was basically going to steal her idea..

Yes, she's been talking about doing an encyclopedia for years (she was waiting until after the series was over), and essentially let the guy put the information on his website, under the condition that he wasn't competing with her in publishing. His encyclopedia is completely based on her books and "borrows" large portions by essentially putting together segments of the books that were told in a non-linear fashions, in linear passages.
She didn't sue him for the money, she sued him to prevent him from publishing, and she's really not been overzealous about suing like some other authors have been.
If it were Disney, and not warner brothers, he'd be in serious trouble.

I agree. She's been extremely understanding and has even lent her advice to a few fanfic/general fan sites along the way. I dont know the details, but something about this guy must have crossed the line.

I heard she actually knew about his book for a while, and helped him with some info, then decided to do her own book, and sued him. He actually may win.

When I first heard about that case she was calling emotional distress. Give me a break.

LOL.. if you even owned something that was worth a billion dollars, you would be protecting it too...

just because you are a broke ass failure, doesnt mean that someone who owns something more valuable than what you have, doesnt have rights is comical...

so, because they are successful, they dont deserve the right to protect their franchise?

From my understanding the encyclopedia this guy was writing was merely a compilation of information fans had sent him over the last year or two or however long. Once he realized how much info he had, he decided to maybe publish it. JKR should just be happy she has tons of supportive fans in the first place. Fans that are nuts about her work to the point of wanting an encyclopedia of it. She's rich off her ass now anyway. She should just roll around in her money and be thankfully she has fans that made her loaded in the first place.

Yeah, good point. For a woman who use to be broke as fuck and is now a millionaire, I definitely have a hard time believing that this lawsuit was her idea.

The guy wrote the Harry Potter lexicon on his website and it was no big deal then. Warner Bros admitted to using it when they developed the movie. And Electronic Arts printed off all of it and stuck it on their walls when they developed the game. And JK said that she used the site.

And she said that other Harry Potter books are cool.

During the trial, the judge said that if JK loses, then she will just appeal all the way to the Supreme Court and that maybe the Court isn't the appropriate place to deal with this matter.

So that is why he wanted to award minimum damages. Then nobody would appeal and this case would be over.

And the Court has the option of awarding the prevaling party its attorneys' fees. But it hasn't done so in this case. JK may make a motion to ask for it, but they probably won't get it.

I don't think she'll sweat it.

For those judging her harshly, I wonder if the response would be the same if it were a guy's work instead of a woman's. Or maybe that's the deal, it's a GUY trying to rip off a woman, and guys are entitled to do that, right? Whereas chicks aren't supposed to have assloads of money?

You can probably console yourselves, though, that most of her lawyers are men and the publishing house that stands to lose money is full of men.

What I find more amazing is that people cry fowl about tube sites, torrents and content thieves, and then say "she's made enough money".
