Detroit is EXTREMELY fucked up.

Houses have such little value a lot of people just up and abandon the house.. Don't even bother trying to sell it or anything..

detroit has very high taxes, they probably had to pay $1 plus a bunch of unpaid taxes/water bill. usually the banks will have to pay it at closing out of their price, but that obviously isnt going to happen.

paying $200-300 a month in taxes on top of having to pay insurance for liability.

actually in detroit they just take the house from you if you get behind in taxes for two years, but you cant close on it without the taxes and water bill being up to date.

I recently had a home like that....family member died....people broke in like 5 times....first the rob the place....then smash things.....then after its empty....they break in again and take all the copper......then break in again to cut the sink faucets off.....then after doors are basiclly sealed shut they still try to break in...

Ended up GIVING the house away!

That's what "Devil's night" is. It's one of those holiday's not really celebrated (or even heard of) elsewhere, but it's not uncommon in Detroit. The land that a lot of the houses sit on (excluding those with unhealthy levels of soil toxins), is worth more than the structures. The taxes are shit though.

Did anyone hear about the house in Pontiac a few years (5+), that was torn down by accident? It was the crackhouse next door that was supposed to be torn down, bu apparently the whole neighborhood was so bad that when there was a mixup, they couldn't tell the difference. There was a lawsuit (of course), but I never heard the outcome.
