He is not leading. The national polls are pretty close, most within the margin of error. But they don't matter. What matters is the electoral college and according to this site ( or any other like it ) http://www.electoral-vote.com/ he is behind and in trouble. The most telling points are the states Virginia, North Carolina, North and South Dakota and Montana. These are all states that Bush won easily and are typically Republican stronghold states. McCain has to fight just to hold on to those while also fighting to win a bunch of the battleground states. For Obama to win he just has to win the states Kerry won (most of which is comfortably ahead in the polls) and then just one battle ground state.

Obama will have at least twice and maybe as much at three times the money McCain has so McCain will be underfunded and having to fight just to hold onto his stronghold states. He has a big uphill fight to climb.

The date on that map is Sep. 07

Barack Obama 238

John McCain 174

142 Solid 32 Leaning

The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator currently shows Obama leading in states with 193 Electoral College votes while McCain leads in states with 183 votes (see Quick Campaign Overview). When leaners are included, it’s Obama 264, McCain 247

That real Clear Politics site is pretty cool.

Whats truly scary though is just how much red there is on it.

Totally unfucking believable that the bible belt is so devout and loyal to the Republicans they are willing to continue fucking themselves.
Even lab rats change behavior after a few shocks of hitting the wrong box.

Them bible beaters are gonna bring on the end of the world some day.

This is a good site as well, but often the map isn't updated as much. For example they still show Ohio for McCain, when there have been some polls in the last week or say showing it has flipped for Obama (but it is still within the margin of error for either). If you click the option of having no leaning states it shows Obama 273 McCain 265 if Obama takes Ohio that would be Obama 293 and McCain 247 which is closer to how Electoral Vote has it.

The difference between the sites, as I understand it, is that RCP changes the map and updates using an average of the polls. So if there are 10 polls for that state and they average out to show McCain with a 1 point lead, he gets that state. Electoral Vote uses a different system. If there are three different polling companies giving the state to someone or the same company with three consecutive polls showing them leading then that state is given to that candidate. For example if you look at RCP for Ohio you see they are averaging 6 different polls. The problem is that two of them are more than two weeks old and another two are more than 10 days old and they only have one that is from this month.

They're trying to find 'dirt' on Palin but I just don't think it's going to pan out. She won't win over Dems but old-style "the base" Conservatives are going to love her the more they get to know her.

For a lot of bible thumpers they are willing to trade some things for others. For example, I know a girl that is hyper religious and ultra pro-life. She has said flat out that she will never vote for a pro-choice candidate no matter what. So that rules out her every voting for a democrat. She would rather vote republican than vote pro-choice. I even asked her if the republicans promised to raise her taxes by 20% would she still vote for them and she said if she knew they were pro-life and that they would be willing to work on overturning Roe V Wade she would.

Some people assume that the president is going to fuck them on taxes and money no matter who the vote for so instead the vote for someone that they agree with on second and third tier issues like abortion and gun control and gay marriage. The republicans figured that out and have used it to their advantage. However, recently many in the christian right have said they will stop voting for a party and more for candidates. That was very evident during the 06 house and senate elections and in the lackluster support that McCain got from the christian right which is why he brought in Palin. There was a good article I read yesterday that said she might be too conservative that many young evangelicals might think she is too extreme and may not support her and McCain.

She can and probably will bring in a nice chunk of christian conservative voters. The question is will she help McCain with the independents. He needed help with the base and the base can deliver a few states like Florida, but he still needs independents and some pundits think for every independent she helps him win over she will alienate him from a another.

Ok, electoral-vote.com is the site I have been using also, I've noticed Obama's lead grows by the day almost, especially since this whole Sarah Palin thing came to light. If McCain wins something seriously has to be rigged.

Anything can happen. Obama is spending a lot of money in the swing states and the states that he is trying to take away from McCain to register voters. The test will be if he can get them to the polls. The big bump from the conservative base that Palin brings will help McCain some, but in the end many of those people already live in red states and Obama doesn't have to win Florida or Ohio to win the election especially since it looks like he is going to take Iowa away from McCain and is threatening in six other states that are typically republican stronghold states.

All that said, there are a bunch of states that are close. McCain could pull of a some kind of major comeback. I don't think it is likely, but in politics anything is possible.

Dems dont know how to fight. If the right was pro choice and we were pro life. They would be showing commercials on how before abortion was legal how women died for a mistake and how obama doesnt care if your daughter dies. we bring flowers to a knife fight. Im investigating Canada as we speak.

Palin reminds me of one of those crazy wives that you see on forensic files, or some show similar, that murders their husbands for an insurance policy. Only with Palin, it would be for Presidency.

No, in recent elections many voted AGAINST the sorry choices served up by the Democratic party ... they didn't necessarily vote Republican.

I agree with this... I'm been a Dem all my life and I'm voting for Obama but we as a party suck at defending ourselves. I will say this, Republicans know how to fight and fight dirty, that's how they've been winning for so long. If Obama doesn't win, I'm done... Shit, I got off my ass and volunterred and heard him speak. I never did that shit for any other politician :2 cents:

Don't confuse "succession" with being appointed/voted into a vacant spot.

headless ghost 09-11-2008 05:44 AM

you can't just leave the office of the VP empty, someone has to be there just in case that president dies or whatever.

headless ghost 09-11-2008 05:45 AM

when Cheney had work done on his heart, who took over for him?

The question was if McCain dies and Palin becomes President, who becomes Vice President?

No one "becomes" vice president the spot is vacant until the next election unless someone is appointed by the president and approved by a vote of congress.

(that's from memory not surfing google so feel free to educate me if I'm wrong)

In an emergency there are set levels of "succession" of power but the permanent filling of the actual vacant positions is a different matter.
