is 411 a canadian thing or does it also mean info, directory, lookup, etc in the us aswell?

Nah, I think it's only the U.S. and Canada thing.

In the 1990s I worked for the phone company and was a 411 operator. I started as an operator, and five years later I was managing the entire call center.

What a great job. You sat there all day long, punched a few things into the computer, and said "have a nice day". And I got paid like $20 an hour for this.

I got killed on 411 charges around christmas one year. Didnt have access to the computer or phone book so kept calling 411 trying to find my kids Nintendo DS's. Ended up being over $200 in charges so I dont use it at all anymore.

Really? How much does your phone company charge per call to call 411?
