USA isn't the only country on the planet - let's discuss Dutch or Canadian politics

good idea - fill me in on who the presidents of Dutchland and Canada are though first- can't make an intelligent comment on them if I don't know who they are

baddog 09-04-2008 08:18 PM

Well, I had an interesting talk over dinner with a local in Amsterdam, and I walked away with the impression that the Dutch hate their government as much as they hate ours (but they like the people).

NickPapageorgio 09-04-2008 08:19 PM

Judging from what Canada's money looks like, I think this guy is their president.

WE have a prime minister ( Steven Harper ) that is a conservative. If let go, he would be as right wing as the GOP... but we care for out hard earned freedoms ( :1orglaugh ) so he cannot stray too far.

He is heading a minority government ( meaning that the 3 opposing parties have more seats ( representation ) then him ). In other words, he can be voted out of office at any time . Same situation in Québec also.

As for his record, he has done a decent honest job. He is the most popular leader , but competition is weak.

Canada 102 later....

_Richard_ 09-04-2008 08:24 PM

Prime Minister is Stephen Harper, and we're about to have an election..

Yup, I'd say it's looking pretty positive that we'll be having an election come the 14th of October. it's funny how an american election takes fucking years to hype and push, and campaign. We just drop the fucking hat, and are like, hey bitches. election in 6 weeks, get ready for it...

EonBlue 09-04-2008 09:13 PM

Yep, I like how quickly our elections happen. The shit that goes on the US for years is just tiresome.

Stephen Harper is the best leader and smartest politician we've had in a long time. He deserves a majority government so he can let loose the hounds on all the leftist twerps in the oppostion parties. :thumbsup

But it won't happen because Toronto is still firmly wedged up the ass of the Liberal and NDP parties.

Rochard 09-04-2008 09:19 PM

I thought Canada was a communist country.....

On average the dutch hate the American government a little more then the Dutch government.
I doubt there are many dutch who would support the republicans.
The dutch love to hate any government in general though....

Canada is just North Wisconsin. They elect candystripers for their government; we set rock and roll to ours. The Dutch make AWESOME stroopwafels.

God bless America.

I wonder how much oil the US buys from Canada. Isn't Canada like the number two exporter to the US?

If so, perhaps someday soon we'll start calling it "North Wisconsin".....

I heard Canada is like the United States' attic. You kind of forget about it until you go up there and see the cool stuff you forgot about.

BradM 09-05-2008 11:34 AM

I was in Minneapolis a few months ago and it reminded me so much of Canada. The people, the food etc. I determined that Canada was a growth that MN cut off, and it just kept growing.

number 1.. by a long shot

this is why we laugh when you guys go 'no more nafta'.. it would probably be the end of the gas prices enjoyed down there

Tempest 09-05-2008 02:59 PM

I'm really torn with this election.. It "appears" Harper has done a pretty good job even with the minority government.. But I still don't trust his conservative values and the nuts in his party... I'm wary since some of the things he's done have been "gimicks".. like lowering the GST.. Also need to get more facts on whether or not this hidden increase in GST revenue (tax on a tax is true or not.. i.e. having to pay GST on the Carbon Tax..

The liberal leader is a wet noodle though and I don't want them in power again until they get a good one. If they had a better leader, I think they'd get voted back in as they've been "punished" enough by now.

from what i have put together it's a done deal.. seemed like the quebecers were interested in keeping them in power, for some sort of unspoken concession.

not sure who i'll be voting.. i like the military spending, but the round about on abortion, and the snap election, which from what i understand has legislation meant to stop that on the next 'set election date', is very detrimental to my opinion for that party

Agreed. I like things the way they are now. Stephen Dion is an idiot, or at least he usually acts like one. I don't care for the 'green shift' thing. I think its a bad idea during poor economic times. However a conservative majority basically gives them card blanche to do whatever their crazy little conservative minds come up with, very scary. I hope this election produces zero results, and things stay the same.

dev777 09-05-2008 05:45 PM

Foreigners and their media outlets obsess over America.. their politics, their celebrities, their films and music, everything. Its funny cause to Americans, the rest of the world doesnt even exist.

Well Alex Trebek and Howie Mandell are Canadian too. All your gameshows are belong to us. :1orglaugh

Anyways, looks aside, Stephen Harper is very smart and shrewd politician. And unlike most other Canadian leaders of the recent past he is not a lawyer, not a millionaire and not conected to the evil PowerCorp. He is more like your average everyday Canadian. He is even writing a book about the history of hockey. :thumbsup
