Cogent Bandwidth

How is cogent bandwidth these days. Signed up with one of the better hosts the other day and a traceroute shows cogentco.

Better Host and Cogent should not he used in the same sentence.:2 cents: You will experience slow latency at times especially during peak traffic times, and an overall slowness.:2 cents::helpme

Cogent is never optimal. If you want QoS and the ability to actually serve on demand, you don't want Cogent. Cogent is considered 'bulk' for a reason.

Cogent and Sprint Break the Internet!

http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/20...k-the-internet

Tens of thousands of public internet addresses located on Cogent's backbone are no longer accessible from Sprint Customers. This disruption is affecting thousands of web properties including WebProNews.com. Drudgereport.com was also affected by this outage but has apparently managed to route around Sprint's network.

According to personnel inside Cogent, negotiations with Sprint regarding peering arrangements fell apart and Sprint "pulled the plug" on all traffic to and from Cogent's network.

This breakage can be viewed at internetpulse.net, a site that monitors peering amongst the largest network backbone providers.

Peering arrangements are common amongst large backbone providers and assure traffic from one network will make it to its destination network. Cogent is no stranger to peering disputes. Cogent pulled the plug on Telia, one of the largest backbones in Europe. Cogent has also had peering problems with Level3 in the fall of 2005 resulting in network breakage.

There is no word from Cogent as to when service will be restored.

Update! Read the PR Newswire report here or here.

Another Update; I have heard from Matthew Sullivan of Sprint who had this to say:

"Jay ? I saw your ?Sprint pulls the plug on Cogent?? story earlier tonight, and I?d like to offer a few comments on behalf of Sprint if you have an opportunity to update your article.

As you noted, Cogent is no stranger to peering disputes, and any statements by Cogent referencing ?negotiations? or ?pulling the plug? are tactics to deflect attention from the real issue relating to a contract that was agreed to and signed by both parties.

We simply want Cogent to honor the terms of an agreed upon contract. Also, we?ve provided Cogent with ample opportunity to honor its contract with Sprint or make alternate connectivity arrangements. "

they have come a long way, but peering was always their problem.

I only give it a few days before they fix it, but it's still a few days of grey out on an already laggy network.

Surprise surprise cogent has been showing better performance to a lot more routes over the past few months. Especially to Europe. We've tested it against, Internap, Savvis, AT&T, Level3, Global Crossing and UUnet. And cogent has held very strong against various testing, but much the same no one should just use one carrier.

But if people are willing to make a small compromise for large savings and see minimal differences overall to your customer base cogent is a great deal.

switch hosts =)

from europe i've found cogent is alot faster then say most premium hosts. Savvis is slow as all hell. I'm talking 15k/sec.

I don't think there is any one upstream provider that actually provides great bandwidth for both US domestic and International. And on the international side I don't think there is any one provider that has the best in all regions.

It's never a good idea having only one provider.

Says who? Cogent in this day and age is almost an essential part of any ISP's network. It's cheap and it's pervasive. So long as your host isn't forcing you through it without some kind of semi-intelligent routing, it's no big deal in this day and age. In fact, a growing number of ISP's have direct peering with Cogent, so the latency you are talking about is almost a thing of the past. Of course there are exceptions to the rule.

Maybe we better wait for Brad Mitchell to post to make sense of all this madness. I heard he's Vint Cerf's love child.
