Juge 10-28-2002 12:48 PM

Let me guess... I'll get 18 more witty replies before a serious one comes along.

BJ 10-28-2002 12:50 PM

I heard it was like 2% of the total credit card biz but I could be wrong

Juge 10-28-2002 12:54 PM

I heard it was $240 million, but it sounds low to me. I've done some quick searches, and they say from $750m-$1b, to $10b. I think different estimates sometimes are for specific niches like videos alone, or just websites.

I'd like to get a grand total.

multisexsite 10-28-2002 12:55 PM

Theres no real way to tell, with many companies being overseas or trying to hide income for tax purposes.

That's true, but I'd like some real estimates from people who know what they are talking about. I don't mean directly from people on this board, but I would like to be pointed to a source of information that is reliable.

You would need a degree from the London School of Economics to figure it out. I've never found good figures on it. There's a ton of porn categories as well. Good question. Good luck on an answer though. No one knows.

Round the US population down to 250 million. If porn consumption is an average of 20 bucks per person annually, you're looking at 5 billion--minimum. I think it's much more and growing. Worldwide it's gotta be more.

Mr.Fiction 10-28-2002 01:23 PM

Yes, there are tons of categories. Perhaps we can get some more accurate answers if we specifically look at each category. I guess it depends on how specific you want to get. How about just online porn from websites, since that's mostly what we are into.

Do you really think the average is $20/person/year? Remember the US population is not all over 18 years of age. I doubt 6 year olds are spending $20/year on playboy mags.

Voodoo 10-28-2002 01:33 PM

Last I heard, it was upwards of $15,000,000,000.00. That is for the entire adult industry. Movie theaters, toy stores, websites, videos, etc...

Not sure though. That was a few years back.

SR 10-28-2002 01:37 PM

I heard that it was 6 billion in 2000
That was just the USA
I think it included all and not just the internet adult biz

EscortBiz 10-28-2002 01:41 PM

$24.95 Recurring

Juge 10-28-2002 01:45 PM

I've heard total yearly income in the US was from $5b to $10b, so I guess it is somewhat consistent with what you guys are saying.

Anybody have the sources to their information? Information by itself means nothing unless the source is known.

TFCash 10-28-2002 01:53 PM

These guys say $230 million for 2001 and will grow to 400 million by 2006 :)

http://www.emarketer.com/news/articl...1001718&ref=ed

They don't give source info though so it's hard to tell what they are lumping in the online sales, if it is just membership sales or includes hard goods ??? If it is just membership dues, then we would be looking at around 770,000 monthly memberships at $25 per month :thumbsup

I heard the $10B number a few years back. And it ain't 10 dudes spending a billion a piece ...

NetRodent 10-28-2002 02:55 PM

Make of these what you will. 10 Billion is an often quoted number, but they're vague about how that number was determined.

I agree - this must be low - I think we are looking at at least three times that.

Mutt 10-28-2002 05:28 PM

There has been a big debate on this topic since Frank Rich wrote a piece in the New York Times about two years ago and pegged the entire world wide porn industry at something like 14 Billion dollars. Total nonsense, way too high.

Forbes I believe took a shot at tearing apart Rich's estimates. I think they estimated the porn biz at maybe a billion per year.

Go do a search on the Forbe's and Rich articles. The Forbes one was good.

I wish that fucking pathetic pamphlet AVN and AVNOnline would do some real journalism. It is NOT hard to figure out how much money annually is made on the Net. There may be thousands of websites out there but only a HANDFULL of billing companies processing the payments. Add up the amount of money processed annually by IBILL, CCBILL, JETTIS, et al and then add maybe another 10%(probably high these days considering less big players have their own merchants) to work in those who
manage their own merchant accounts and processing.

Google: search 'Forbes' 'porn industry' 'Frank Rich porn industry'

should get you something.

Mutt 10-28-2002 05:37 PM

Here's the Forbe's article "How Big Is Porn?"

good stuff.

Madball 10-28-2002 06:18 PM

C'mon this is a great market sizing case study. All those Harvard Business School dropouts that made their carreers in online porn, let's hear it!

the ENTIRE adult industry is 4 billion in the U.S. alone. Jenny Jones did a show on it once. Heard the same thing from other sources as well. 28% of all online transacations are also adult related.

Juge 10-29-2002 05:55 AM

Thanks for the links, Rodent. Someone's doing their homework. :)

http://www.forbes.com/2001/05/25/0524porn.html :

The idea that pornography is a $10 billion business is often credited to a study by Forrester Research. This figure gets repeated over and over. The only problem is that there is no such study. In 1998, Forrester did publish a report on the online "adult content" industry, which it pegged at $750 million to $1 billion in annual revenue. The $10 billion aggregate figure was unsourced and mentioned in passing.

ED 10-29-2002 07:04 AM

I heard that 95% of the money made through porn is made on the net... and 95% of the money made on the net is porn.

All I know is that whenever I hear the mainstream press talk about how many adult sites there are, or how much revenue is involved, I almost always fall out of my chair laughing. If you count amateur girl sites and vanity sites of various kinds, there must be 10's of thousands in the US alone...at least. Back when I worked (briefly) for XPics, I remember reading an article that estimated adult online revenues, and from what I knew of XPics' revenues and how much they paid out to webmasters (lots and lots of sites getting thousands of dollars a week, and a few getting 10,'s of thousands), their estimate had to be off by at least one order of magnitude, because even then there was a lot more to the industry than just XPics.

NetBabe 10-29-2002 12:03 PM

I've seen from $8 Billion to $11 Billion, but I think we make up a small percentage of the overall VISA pie. It is somewhere in the Trillions, their total business that is.
