The reason for these seemingly brilliant performances has nothing to do with some remarkable training breakthrough or even performance-enhancing drugs. No, the improvement is all due to new technology swimsuits; the king of which is the Speedo LZR fast suit.

The science behind these suits is interesting. They were designed in conjunction with NASA and are reported to reduce drag by up to 5 per cent over the previous Fastskin suits and up to nearly 40 per cent improvement over a traditional lycra suit. Not only are the materials space-age, the actual cut of the suits is also designed to change the shape of the athlete's body, presumably squashing any sticky-out bits that cause extra drag. They even look fast.

Not that Speedo have it all their own way. Mizuno, TYR, Arena, and Asics have all released their versions of the new improved suits, but it is Speedo who have cornered the publicity.

No it's not cheating. From the posts I read of yours I didn't think you were a "searcher for anything to drag someone down." (no pun intended haha) Anyway, just enjoy that a great American swimmer kicked ass. Next people will try to blame the fact that his upper body is longer than his legs, and his hands are large for his body size, and all the other body dimensions he has that aid in making him a phenomenal swimmer. They were saying great thing about him in Athens and the suit would be available for anyone to buy. Three other companies make the suit. Now leave that gorgeous American fed boy alone. But on a side note I did hear it took an hour to get the thing on and you had to be wet. I bet some fashion designer will get a hold of the material and make undergarments for women with it. Hmm money money money! :thumbsup

technology will always get better with time and that is just the way it is. Swimsuits making you faster ? Sure, they will probably be even better in London in 2012

all racing pools have gutters. hell. they had them when i swam in college.

moreover, that only helps the outside lanes.

and phelps only wore the pants version of the lzr suit, not the full suit, but many other swimmers did.
