What happened to the American Taliban?

John Walker, the "American Taliban" only received 20 years in prison.

I was watching a documentary about the removal of the Taliban from power a few days ago. It was pretty good actually. Good footage.

Looking back on it, I can't help but think "That's not an army. That's just a bunch of guys in sheets"

mika 10-28-2002 09:15 AM

How do actually sign up to the taleban movement?

DjSap 10-28-2002 09:20 AM

he is getting gang raped in prison as we speak...

Considering they started out a student movement in Pakistan, and then consolidated with the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan to take over an entire country... they did ok.

Sunshine McGillicutty 10-28-2002 09:23 AM

Am I the only person who thinks he didn't deserve 20 years?

pottdoctor 10-28-2002 09:25 AM

i think he's in Cell Block Bubba. maybe we'll be seeing him in some nice prison rape TGPs....

In most wars, traitors are shot, few questions asked.

Pretty much the same thing as with Jane Fonda. Why SHE has not been tried as a traitor is beyond me.

Strange how student movements pretty often lead to revolutionary movements that become governments one day, by the way.

Must be something with those students

KingK7 10-28-2002 09:30 AM

Here's a little something about Jane Fonda, during the Vietnam War:

When he joined the Taliban we weren't at war with them. In fact there was never a formal declaration of war. There is no evidence he intented to fight against and kill americans, and no evidence he had any causal role in the death of Mike Spann.

ADL Colin 10-28-2002 09:33 AM

Labret,

The Taliban should have picked up some history books instead of that damned Koran.

They might have read such classics as the following.

In 149 BC, the Romans ordered the Carthaginians to leave their city and settle inland. Thinking they could stand up to the mighty Romans, the Carthaginians refused. The Romans sent in their legions and beat the Carthaginians down - they burned their city to the ground, the survivors were enslaved and Carthage annexed. Carthage would never rise again.

Of course he did not.

All he did was join a foreign army. Something that happens often. The Taliban never declared war against the US, so he never fought against the US. Why dont they go and round up all the Americans currently serving in the French Foreign Legion? I guess we have to wait until the FFL pisses off the United States. Why arent we rounding up all the Americans fighting with the Chechens? Why didnt we arrest all the Americans who fought with the Croats? Or with the Serbs? Surely they fired on Americans when the bombing campaign started. Which is more than Lindh ever did.

Walker did jack shit wrong and it sickens me that you homos would applaud the government and allow them to tell you who and what you are "free" to believe. Although not surprised. Dumbasses.

What in the hell does that have to do with anything?

And its nice how you left out the story before and the story after, even though I have no idea what you are getting at. That was a very long, very drawn out, very complicated conflict that people have spent lifetimes studying. And I see no even remotely similar resemblance at all to what just happened in Afghanistan. Nor how it is applicable to the conversation or argument at hand.

ADL Colin 10-28-2002 09:46 AM

Labret,

Did you think the Taliban had a chance of staying in power?

If yes, why were you so wrong?

If no, why didn't the Taliban realize it when it was so obvious to you?

ADL Colin 10-28-2002 09:47 AM

While we're at it, I vote that we "round up" Labret.

The history of such lopsided conflicts is that the losers are usually vanquished. Sometimes, a group looks back and says "Remember when we defeated the so and so back in when and when?" and think that one case is representative rather than looking at the overall trend. The mightier almost always win.

The Taliban made that error. So did Carthage.

I'd think there's a difference being a member of a rabid muslim group in Afghanistan, and being a member of a unit within the N.A.T.O.

What I dont see is why everyone seems to even give a shit about this guy.. He is a traitor, shoot him and get it over with.

But noooo... Pull out the media, do a thorough story on him and his family, and try to get a nice portrayal of him. It sells.
Jeez..

Why was I so wrong? About what exactly?

Chance of staying in power before and after what?

They were months, or possibly even weeks, from crushing their only opposition... the Northern Alliance.

The only thing that removed the Taliban from power was the United States. Whats your point?

The Taliban did jack shit but piss off the Americans. And not even remotely similar in the manner in which Carthage pissed off Rome. Carthage fucking marched onto Roman soil after defeating several Roman armies.

Where were the great hordes of Taliban on our soil?

Shows how serious Bush really is/was about protecting us.

I have lost all faith in america.

I will no longer even capitalize it when I refer to it.

We are not protected and Bush is letting Osama and Saddam bitch slap us whenever they want. He has bombed us before and will continue to do so, meanwhile they plan another side track, what will happen next? nother sniper to keep us blinded?

Fuck america

Im ashamed.

Treason consists of two elements: adherence to the enemy, and rendering him aid and comfort. Cramer v. U. S., U.S.N.Y., 325 U.S. l, 65 S.Ct. 918, 9327 89 L.Ed. 1441. See 18 U.S.C.A. 2381.

Lindh adhered to the Taliban and rendered them aid, however they weren't the enemy when he offered his services. Finding him guilty of treason would necessitate that the government prove that he intended to harm America. There is no evidence that was the case.

But lets not let the facts get in our way...

And the alternative would be... start shrieking "He's a traitor!" anytime a discussion comes up, hoping that if you say it enough times people will believe it despite the lack of evidence? It certainly sells, just ask Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

Labret,

We switched subjects at:

"Considering they started out a student movement in Pakistan, and then consolidated with the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan to take over an entire country... they did ok."

They did ok? They could still be in power if they had
a modicum of a sense of their military capabilities in comparison to that of the USA. They were offered a chance and somehow came to the conclusion that fighting the US was better than extraditing Bin Laden.
Maybe they thought Allah would stop the US bombs.

Beating the Cincinnati Bengals does not mean that one "did ok".

Taleban is already gaining more popularity in Pakistan. And probably elsewhere. It's not dead

You are smack in the middle of the Second Punic War and I in the Third. Generations apart. Rome grew mighty in between those wars and Carthage declined.

Only one lesson. Don't fight when you are severely overmatched and don't read too much into the results of wars from generations ago.

Ahhhhhhh ok. I dont even know where to start.

Like they had any options? Turn over Bin Laden and get their asses taken over by the cronies he left behind. Or let the Americans bomb the shit out of them. Either way, they were gonna lose. AND they still had to continue to fight their fight against the Northern Alliance at the same time.

Now you tell me, what options did they have. And dont use some Carthage example.

Yes, that has been my point all along. It was completely obvious to you, me, and a whole lot of other people - but not to the Taliban. Now you are agreeing with me.

Hannibal has as much to do with the point at hand as Ahmad Shah Durrani does.

I think Qhadafi will crush that without our assistance.

Now if the UN gives it to them, then we have a different story.

Other than stupidity I don't see that he committed any crime at all. The government threw those conspiracy charges at him not because they were sure they could win a conviction in front of an impartial jury, but because they knew there was no impartial jury, and that his lawyers would get him to take the 20 year plea rather than risk it.

Getting someone to plea to something they didn't do rather than risking conviction on more serious charges, false though they may be, is an all too common perversion of the Justice system.

Well considering the hole is 23 hours of "solitary", and one hour of supervised alone time, the odds of "bubba" getting ahold of him are slim to nill.
