Damn. Dog was close to being used as shark bait. Has hook through mouth.

October 19, 2005?A veterinarian on the island of Réunion, just off the coast of Africa, prepares to remove a fishing hook from a pet dog's snout this past summer. The dog had escaped fishers who planned to use it as shark bait, according to the animal rights group that shot the video from which the image is taken.

Though apparently restricted to a few amateur fishers, the practice is now seen as a problem on the French-controlled island, which teems with stray dogs and cats. Local authorities this month fined a man for hooking a puppy, and the French government has issued a statement condemning the illegal practice.

So funny how we work..

Tons of people here regularly do that to fish, frogs and call that "a great day".. And tonight we'll all be eating dead animals.

I think people believe that dogs and other pets actually are far more aware than a mere fish.

I know it would seem far more cruel to me to use a dog as bait over a large fish.

Huggles, ben.. That's my point really, I said funny how *we* work.. I have a dog too, I love him to death, it sickens me to see this picture.. Yet I'd gladly stick a hook through a fishes head for the hundredth time like it was nothing..

Why do we value certain animals much more than others? Is it solely their ability to be cute? If I picture a vicious, angry dog in my head.. I still don't want to see it with a hook through its nose, and wouldn't wish it upon him.. Is it just that we've become close to certain animals?

Just interesting how the nearly exact same thing can elicit two entirely different responses from the same person. It's still an animal on a hook, yet it's so completely different.

For this reason, I think it's ridiculous to judge people from halfway across the world for things like this. To them, this just made sense. They don't view dogs the same way we do, they are street scavengers. Even if you have a dog there, it's not a pet, it would never be allowed in the house, etc. (generalising, I'm sure someone there has a pet dog) but y'know what I'm saying? My wife used to really dislike cats, because she's from Mexico and they never had a pet cat.. To them cats are kinda scary, since they only encounter them wild on the street.

Anyways my point is that it's quite often we find ourselves outraged at the acts of someone from another culture, because all we do is compare that same situation to our own life and those around us, and say "that's barbaric".

However many of us do VERY similar barbaric things on a regular basis, but they're considered normal because it's customary and common. What right do we have to say the fish's life is any less valuable? If we watched it hatch from an egg, survive as a minnow, and grow to a big fish.. We might care about it.. And then to see someone just net it up and stick a hook through it's head just for the chance of catching an even bigger fish, might make us upset..

But alas. I'm not against people putting fish hooks through heads, just sayin.. I gotta go to the store, I'm mixing vegetables with dead pig and dead chicken to make soup.

You have to be careful when giving a pet away. There are some real sick assholes out there that will take free dogs and cats to use as bait like this or to feed to pet snakes.

Thanks for the hug :) I

Socks your'e talking about the continent of Africa. Millions of people would have pet dogs. In fact if you read the article you will see this dog was someones pet.

People have to eat, I understand that but to feed a giant hook through a dogs nose and then torture it is 100% wrong no matter where you live. They could use other fish for live bait not torture dogs and cats.

shekinah 08-27-2008 05:09 PM

I just hate animal cruelty.. It would be better for me to see them die on their own than kill them, use them as bait.

CamTraffic 08-27-2008 06:12 PM

seen before, just wrong!

Bird 08-27-2008 06:17 PM

No thats not real...

If it was a stray then why does the dog have a collar on. Where the blood from the hook in his mouth.

Spunky 08-27-2008 06:35 PM

Disturbing pic to say the least

pornask 08-27-2008 06:38 PM

scubadiver626 08-27-2008 08:35 PM

that's so wrong...

After Shock Media 08-27-2008 08:35 PM

Why do I really feel this is a hoax.

Hell even the hook placement and size versus size of the dog makes no sense.

After Shock Media 08-27-2008 08:37 PM

http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp makes a bit more sense.
