Anyone try HughesNet internet service ???

I currently have a aircard for when I'm at my place in the boonies but it is like watching paint dry when uploading. Anyone use HughesNet and what speed/package did you have?

thanks!

I know it's not, yet not snot, perhaps knot snot or alot of snot, but it's knot not snotty or is that Scotty, but if it is Scotty then beam me up Scotty and don't land me in the potty. Unlike the guy in the corner I do not like poo, though I do use Yahoo.

We'll party Hardy but not let us forget Laurel, stands to reason it is important to know his name is Stan and not ham, but he who is Stan likes Green Eggs and Ham.......

I used it a while back an honestly think of what Cable internet was in its early days... During peak hours its slow as hell but in the middle of the night you can get close to the advertised speeds.

I use sprint tethering with my PDA phone + PDANET to dodge getting raped by the aircard prices... I'd suggest saving the big uploads till you get home. I get 700Kb downloads out in the boonies with my PDA hooked to the laptop and I LOVE the places 3G is available...

I used hughes back when they called it Direcway, since I lived out in the country it was the only fast speed I could get, at the time. Download was nice speed, but the put a cap on ya, I think its a hundred megs. Upload is shit, about half of what dialup was.

how long ago did you have it? they are advertising decent speeds for their lower packages. Keep in mind DSL and Cable are not available due to it being in BFE

We had it installed for my girlfriend's father because he couldn't get anything else and we were spending a lot of time there a while back. No cell service and no real high speed internet. But it's 3 miles away from the ski slopes. So I guess there's a trade off.

That said, HughesNet is bearable if there's absolutely no other option. I will be able to go away this weekend for 4 days and not feel totally disconnected, so it does what it does. You are severely limited to how much you can up and download each day and it sucks if you go over. Don't expect to get much real work done. Email, IM, web browsing, etc.

So they do limit the transfer?

Yep. And it's something like you can't go over 200 mb used in the past 24 hours. It's screwy if you ask me, but when there's no other option they have you by the balls. We went over it the first night and then you get lagged to what amounts to dial up speed for 24 hours or so as a punishment of sorts. Now we know not to do much work, or use Remote Desktop or something like that and connect and upload from home.

hughesnet directway what ever you call them is total shit. I use to live out in the country and thats all i could get. Down speed is good upload is total shit. They will "FAP" you if you use alot of bandwidth. (fap = fair access policy read up!) I paid 700 to have that shit installed and it was no more then 6 months later i went to something else. Thier customer service is overseas. Give them a call before you buy you will see waht i mean. TAke my advise...dont do it
