The downfall of the all American hotdog?

How come there aren't big franchises and mom and pop fast food joints that specialize in hotdogs? I know here and there there are some but by and large it's all burger, taco, sub sandwiches and other types - the hotdog has been reduced to also ran status :Oh crap

i could think of a ton of great specialty hot dogs and sausages - is a hotdog even still on the menu at A&W? they had great hotdogs waaaaaaaay back when I was a kid

BlackCrayon 08-23-2008 11:11 AM

Harveys here in canada has hotdogs but they' never seemed very popular. I'd imagine the american version, Hardees does as well.

Sly 08-23-2008 11:15 AM

Yeh they still have them at A&W, I think Dairy Queen as well. It would be nice if more people had brats...

baddog 08-23-2008 11:17 AM

I don't usually eat dogs, but as I had to do a BBQ for 30 people or so on the 4th and dogs were on the menu, I decided to try one.

It was so good I had two. I think they are better these days.

As far as big franchises that specialize in dogs:

Brats would make a great idea for a fast food franchise - rather than competing with 20 burger and pizza and sub franchises you carve out your own niche with something different

Nathans is great, and I think one of the original founders of hotdogs...

Vital Hot Dog Statistics
In 2007, consumers spent more than $4.1 billion on hot dogs and sausages in U.S. supermarkets, that equals more than 1.5 billion pounds of hot dogs and sausages bought at retail stores alone.

Americans will eat enough hot dogs at major league ballparks this year to stretch from RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. to AT&T Park in San Francisco.

New Yorkers consume more hot dogs than any other city, beating out Chicago and Los Angeles.

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport consumes SIX times more hot dogs, 725,000 more than Los Angeles International Airport and LaGuardia Airport combined.

On Independence Day, Americans will enjoy 150 million hot dogs, enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. over five times.

During Hot Dog Season, Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.

U.S. soldiers in military posts around the world from Fort Meyers in Arlington, Va. to Okinawa, Japan to Aqaba, Jordon consumed 2.4 million hot dogs last year.

Last time i had an A&W hotdog it was the size of my pinky, literally... that was like last month.. Nathan's is probably the most widely known hotdog joint.

More Sonics than Dairy Queens now in Texas and Oklahoma.

Mutt 08-23-2008 01:10 PM

Dairy Queen was my dream franchise to own - without the Brazier food thing - cuz if you want one of those they are millions of dollars to invest. They only do the ice cream only DQ's in spots where there's high traffic and they can't build a Brazier full menu one. Even the ice cream only ones are hella expensive.

candyflip 08-23-2008 01:24 PM

We have a bunch of Mom and Pop and regional chain Hot Dogs places where I'm at, but that might just be because the best hot dogs ever are produced here.

Agreed, Hebrew National is the best! Costco serves the huge fatty ones outside their stores:)

CDSmith 08-23-2008 01:52 PM

"Also ran"... yep, that's basically what the hotdog is to most restaurants. Here in Winnipeg there are a few places that have them on the kids menu, but where the hotdog makes it's biggest impact is with the hotdog cart business. Every summer the city is rife with them. Thanks to those thousands of carts the hotdog is more popular than ever.

There's nothing better after a night of heavy pouring to step outside the bar and buy a big honking smokey on a bun.... onions, saurkraut, mustard, hot banana pepper slices, cheese.... 47 napkins..... ahhh, heaven.

Ya so that wont be for a while hehe. I hadn't ever see the actual numbers there. Most ones when I ever looked at them back 5 or more years ago I recall being around 160,000 for start up capital and franchise fees. But quaker steak and lube is more than just a building with a kitchen. They have cars hanging upside down from the ceiling etc.
