Micheals Phelps is great, but best ever, come on

After watching the olympics this year and hearing all the accolades for Phelps, I was thinking how many swimming events are there. What it boils down to is he is a really fast swimmer and there happened to be 8 different events centered around that. Calling him greatest althlete ever (mostly by Americans) is kindof ridiculous, yeah I now he useless different strokes but big whoop.

If there was eight different running events isn't there a good chance Bolt would have probably won them all. But if ur a really fast runner u got a couple of events max u can compete in. Just putting that into perspective Phelps is great, no where near greatest. It would basically be the the same as have running events for 40m, 45m , 50m etc and one guy winning them all, just my two cents though....

A side note:

Here?s the list of most gold medals won in a single Games:

8. Michael Phelps, USA, aquatics (2008)

7. Mark Spitz, USA, aquatics (1972)

6. Kristin Otto, East Germany, aquatics (1988)

6. Vitaly Scherbo, Unified Team, gymastics (1992)

In theory only these events are the ones where you can win more than 5 golds.

I'm guessing this is why the call him the greatest...

tranza 08-22-2008 10:10 AM

Best ATHLETE ever?

Never heard about that before. Are americans really saying that?

TyroneGoldberg 08-22-2008 10:11 AM

Oh i see. Canada only won 3 golds. :1orglaugh

Sarah_Jayne 08-22-2008 10:18 AM

I do really appreciate what he has done but I also agree and not only that I don't think he is the best olympian. Maybe the best Olympic swimmer but how can you compare across the events. Steven Redgrave won five gold medals for rowing at five consecutive Olympics. There weren't the same number of races each Olympics for him to win but he stayed the best in his sport for five Olympics. I don't see how either could be fairly judged against the other.

And it works.

Phelps has won 40 golds in addition to his other medals.

CDSmith 08-22-2008 11:29 AM

He's the greatest swimmer (so far)

Greatest athlete? That's a bit much.

klaze 08-22-2008 11:31 AM

Who's calling Phelps the greatest athlete ever?

The media.. and then people who are just kinda dumb go along with it and promote the idea and repeat it..

Which is fantastic and surely makes him a great swimmer. A rower would never have the chance to win that many golds because there aren't that many races to win them in. You have to respect being the best in your sport for 20 years.

Well, most people get a life after 2 olympics. :thumbsup

Actaully I did a search and it seems he didn't row alone. Right? or am I wrong?

Part of a team..pairs and fours...as is how the sport works but with him being the consistent member of all those teams. Again, my point wasn't to scream that one was better than the other but that I don't see how people in different sports can be compared against each other when what stands for accomplishment is different in different sports.

The Duck 08-22-2008 12:08 PM

I say he causes global cooling.

BardMan 08-22-2008 12:15 PM

franks mad cause phelps has more gold medals than Canada has.

Look he is FAR from the greatest athlete ever-- but close to one of the best Olympians ever. (in terms of winning more gold, which is a pretty dumb bar to weigh someone on)

I give him alot of credit. he didnt just win these events- he roasted the competition.
