How long does a US check take to clear in Canada?

Any idea how many business days? I sent a check to someone there for a domain & it hasn't cleared yet. Been around 8 business days already.

Is that normal?

Up to 30 days according to the banks.

Ive had difficulties with checks from Canada... took a week to clear... business days too...

Purely because banks dont trust each other... Maybe the branch its being cashed at isnt that familiar with your bank?

it happens...

Yup, WG is right.

One of my banks says 21 days, my other one says their clearing (hold) time is 20 days.

If you have done business with the company before, MOST CDN banks will "pre-approve / clear" the funds for use. But there's still a hold and clearing time on the banks end. TD told me it's about 21 days.

Just look at your own bank statement.. when it clears on their end it will be taken from your account usually.

Depends on the bank, etc...

yeah, i've looked at it... nada, so i was wondering how long it usually takes

ah well, just gotta wait it out

until "shit for brains" gets out of the White House, and the US dollar is actually worth something

SmokeyTheBear 08-19-2008 11:09 AM

instantly , you just go in and say " i dont want to wait for this check to clear , can you auth it now please"

keep in mind this is all bank-to-bank so some banks have diff rules. i have had some banks charge me a $50 fee for cashing a $30 american check plus a 30 day wait. " they charged me the $50 fee the same day lol "

either way they can always go to "Money Mart™" or some other place and cash it instantly practically anywhere in canada, theres a small fee invloved but its prob like 7$ on 100

yeah, this lady deposited it like a standard check... no sweat, its just a personal use domain

thanks guys

When I lived in Canada it would "clear" instantly -- but that was just overdraft protection / credit / good standing with the bank. Normally it is 30 days. Funny because down here in Costa Rica my bank clears all U.S. checks in exactly 8 business days, and in the online banking it'll tell you exactly which day you'll have access to the funds on a certain deposited check.
