I’m getting tired with Michael Phelps

I’m watching baseball on Spanish station right now because they are doing round 10 of Michael Phelps special on channel 5.

I have Olympics going on in my office all day long, and I already learned about his diet, his family and how he gave up his space in relay 4 years ago. Not only I know about it, I have to be reminded every day about it as if theres nothing else to talk about.
Seriously, he’s a machine with nobody that would even get close to him, but there are so many other great Americans that lived their lives to be in the Olympics.. I with they would interview that Darfur kid that was caring the flag so that US can stick it to Chinese ass about selling weapons to Sudan.

Alky 08-15-2008 11:20 PM

All I know is he is the man... like you said.. a machine.

Supz 08-15-2008 11:23 PM

It is out of control. I actually had someone tell me that he is a great 'athlete', yes the guy can swim, but put him on a football field or something. The guy is famous every 4 years. In 2 months everyone will have forgotten he is even alive. I'de rather watch pre-season football then swimming

Are you really comparing football to swimming? I'd like to see you put Peyton Manning in a pool.

amen..
I was about to say the same thing. Not about putting him on the football field but about him being gone in 2 month..
I can put you on ice to play hockey tomorrow night against my beer league team and you would have your teeth and tail bone crushed in 20 minutes…

SomeCreep 08-15-2008 11:32 PM

He's a real life merman.

I agree!!! Michael Phelps is a fraud! 7 gold medals with a chance for an 8th? NO WAY!! Nobody will give a shit about "Olympic Champion" shit and " more gold medals than any athlete in history. Seriously, can you eat a gold medal?

Give me a great pre-season match up between Tampa Bay and Arizona anyday! NOW THAT IS SOME DRAMA!

ROCK ON MOFO!!!!

GO USA!

PersianKitty 08-15-2008 11:51 PM

Cracked me up last night.

After number 6, Bob Costas said "Yeah it?s impressive, yeah it?s historic, and at this point it?s also ridiculous."

UniversalPassLorence 08-15-2008 11:52 PM

He is awsome :thumbsup

pamon 08-16-2008 12:19 AM

He's more of an athlete than 99% of us and in the US are. He's a true specimen of athletic greatness and 7 medals is awesome.

Do want NFL back though and think NFL kicks a swimmer's ass anyday...:)

Right. you are smart. I didnt say he was a bad athlete or what he is doing isnt great. But its 97.8% hype. Its boring to watch. And I personally think the media is taking it a little out of control.

d-null 08-16-2008 12:37 AM

just wait til the tv commercials start where he is hyping some product :2 cents:

he already is all over the commercial. but along with the hype it will only last a few months. The guy makes a lot of money. over 5 mil a year in endorsements is what they said. But I watched him 4 years ago. He did great then. I didnt hear about him until 2 months ago when all the olympic stuff started

The guy is breaking an all time record, at the only event that reunite all the countries in the world under one roof...

He's not breaking a sport's record, he's breaking a record for all athletes from all countries.

If he does good in the next olympics, his record might be there for another hundread years to come.

I think i wrote this before. I am not saying the guy isnt talented. Or what he isn't doing isn't great. He is great. What I am saying is that the hype is just overkill and it wont be something in conversations in 2 months. The baseball team I like is in a pennant race right now. I haven't seen baseball teams so close at the end of the season in a while. That to me is exciting. Comebacks that will be talked about from generation to generation. How many people do you know tell there grand kids about famous 'swimmers' in there day.

You're saying baseball is more universal then olympics ? You're in a bubble :)

It's not going to be a legend grandfathers tell to their kids, it's going to be a record that will be held and talked about at pretty much every olympics for a long time.

Right now the name of Micheal Phelps is known by a couple billions people, you can't say that about any baseball player.

It's not even close of beeing at the same level. It's world wide.

Are you serious? It will be a record. In a book. Period. Yes, when the Olympics come around every 4 years people will talk about it. When the Olympics aren't happened. No one will remember. I took about how I can't wait to see football this upcoming season. Basketball. So on so forth. Once again. It is great what he is doing. But to be compared as a 'greatest athlete'. I don't buy that.. I'm not gonna go on rant of how there is 100x the amount of competition in other sports either. The 8 gazillion kids that grow up playing baseball(example) and the 40 at swim camp.

I totally understand where you're comming from.

I personally couldn't give 2 shits about swimming, and for the matter american football or baseball... I'm a fan of mixed martial arts, passionate fan...

But right now what is happening isn't about about a single sport, it's about an athlete breaking records of the biggest sporting event in the world... an event that has been held for a very long time, and in wich every country participates in.

It's not anything compared to baseball or football... it's universal. Worldwide.

The modern olympics cover like 100 years of WORLD WIDE COMPETITION - not just Arizona vs. Tampa Bay. HE IS BEATING THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!

THE BEST OF EVERYONE IN THE WORLD! EVERYONE!!!!!

Do you understand?

Not only is he beating the best in the world, he has set 6 WORLD FUCKING RECORDS while beating everyone and their mother.

Holy shit, what if he wins an 8th gold tomorrow - you might have to wait to hear if Carolina's 3rd string guard has a sprained ankle. You fucking mush brain. You deserve the hell that your life is.

GO DETRIOT LIONS! Ya, that's some significant shit.

I think I heard that as well. Twice the volume of blood. 4 vs. 8? I can't remember.

Who cares about Michael Phelps anyway. Chad Johnson might have something significant to contribute to the world. I can't wait to see him catch a football. WOW!

seeandsee 08-16-2008 01:54 AM

He likes energy drinks :)

papill0n 08-16-2008 02:02 AM

We only have to hear about the guy for a short time and then the hype will die. Being one of the most gifted athletes to grace a pool for many many years he deserves a little cred imho.

So, what about your "baseball" team's history do you still talk about today? I sure hope they cured cancer, because anything less will make me laugh in your face.

What the fuck are you snorting anyway?

WORLD competition. WORLD competition. EVERYONE IN THE WORLD!

EVERYONE IN THE WORLD FOR THE LAST 100 YEARS. EVERY HUMAN YOU MONKEY!

I've never said anything bad about people on a board because its all an opinion. But you are a moron. You obviously have a hard time reading. This is probably the last time Im gonna say that what he is doing is GREAT. BUT I FEEL IT IS OVER HYPED BY THE MEDIA BECAUSE NO ONE WILL TALK ABOUT IT FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS. The damn World Series Of Poker gets more airtime these days then then any olympic sport when the olympics arent in 'Season'. Go swin you shit for brains.

Do you really think he is more of an athlete than 99% of us?

Do you really think he is more of an athlete than 99% in the U.S.?

Not to point out how idiotic your statement is, but I have to, or I will be forced to laugh at you all by myself.

How many current board members are there on GFY? Let's make a crazy estimate of 100,000. That means that you are stating that Michael Phelps migh not be a better athlete than 1000 of the sorry GFY drug addicted message board posters? You seriously think 100o (or even 1) GFY board loser is a better athlete than Michael Phelps???? OH FUCK YOU!

Now, 99% of the US? How many fat americans are there anyway? Over 300 million?

So, for Michael Phelps to be a better athlete than 99% of Americans, that means you seriously believe that there are 3 MILLION people in the United States (alone) that are better athletes than Michael Phelps.

OH FUCK ME HARD!

DO you understand how stupid you sound?

Good.

Great point - stupid.

Don't you think it is kind of hard to "overhype" someone doing something that has never been done before by any human in the world . . . EVER?

Go back to your chips and salsa and hope you can see a miraculous EXTRA POINT KICK IN A PRESEASON FUCKING SCRIMMAGE!!!!

Maybe you can have a front row seat to one of thousands of baseball players deciding to NOT run out a ground ball.

You are disgusting.

NOW A FOUL BALL IS WORTHY OF YOUR BRAIN SPACE - RIGHT MORON?

Are you Phelps' boyfriend or something . You seem to be taking me not caring about swimming a little personal. Are you Greg Luganis?

The guy didn't find water on the moon. He is swimming. I can careless if he keeps the record forever. If this wasn't the Olympics no one would care. Therefore I don't care

Hooked on Phonics worked for me.

for the rest of you..my last 3 responses were to piss this guy off and to reserve sig space.

peedy 08-17-2008 04:18 AM

I agree the coverage is starting to get to be too much, but I am not minding too much. America is in need of a sports hero. With Marion Jones turning out to be a fraud, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, etc....all our sports hero's are turning out to be frauds. I like Phelps because he is a normal guy doing amazing swims, appears to be clean, and handles himself in the most humble of ways.

selena 08-17-2008 08:49 AM

Soon enough the media will go back to reporting the really important stuff about Lindsay Lohan and her girlfriend, various sex tapes, and who broke up with who. They overhype everything, that is what they do, and basically, they dish out shit. This time they are not, imho.

Shortly after the Olympics end, so will the hype.

The guy has worked his ass off for years to get where he is, and has set a record that likely will outlive all off us and all of our children. Maybe even our children's children.

So even if some of the coverage is a bit tedious, he's earned the glory.

Let him have it. :)

sltr 08-17-2008 08:52 AM

yah, we all forgot about mark spitz a couple months after he won 7 in 1972

SilentKnight 08-17-2008 11:43 AM

Its kinda' sad when people denegrate the man himself instead of the media for their (sometimes) over-the-top coverage.

Phelps is a great athlete, at the top of his game - best in the world. He didn't ask the media to make him the poster child for success and accomplishment.

To those who say he'll be forgotten shortly after the Olympics end...that's just ridiculous. Have we forgotten summer Olympians like Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz, Nadia Comaneci, Kurt Thomas, Olga Korbut, Donovan Bailey and Carl Lewis...to name just a few.

RP Fade 08-17-2008 11:50 AM

Well I am kinda getting tired of it too but we have witnessed one of the greatest moments in sports history, not just swimming history, but sports history. I don't think anyone in sports will have a 'clutch' moment like this for a long, long time and people will be talking about it for decades, maybe centuries, just like Wilt's 100 points, USA vs Russian hockey, Tiger in 97 masters, Carl Ripken's streak, Michael Jordan (too many to name), etc.

I mean when you look up at the stands and see Kobe, Lebron, Jason Kidd and other celebs/athletes there, you know it's something monumental..

minddust 08-17-2008 12:24 PM
