Clones of Digg
Anyone who is thinking about running a clone of Digg, stay away from phpdug and pligg. If it isn't an exploit in the code, it's a horrible spaghetti nightmare, topped with a nice pile of "holy ugly template engines". Yes, they are THAT bad.

Pay a coder and a designer and you'll have a custom sweet solution for less than $2K. Anything free is free for a reason.

I say try them for yourself. I'm speaking especially in regards to Pligg.
Templates can be modded and exploitable code cleaned up. Pligg is an easy install and just as easy to mod - even with limited PHP skills. Do the market research for yourself. Free is good when you read the manual and take care to interact with others running the software. A new Pligg version just came out as well - www.pligg.com |
I have no intention of cloning anything. :)

digg cost less than 10k to build in the first place
