Underage Chinese? There Goes the Americans Media Whining Again
 

So the Chinese win the team Gold in gymnastics and now there's new stories and investigative reports that some of the girls may be under 16 (the required age to compete). Sounds like sour grapes to me.

But instead lets look at their arguments: That the girls are very small, don't weigh enough and look young

1) One of the girls is only 68 pounds. American girls they say average 100 pounds at 16. What they fail to mention is that on average, Americans weigh more than Chinese people, in fact more than everyone, as the most obese country in the world.

2) They are short - only 4'6" apparently for one of the girls. Besides Yao Ming, is it not possible that Chinese people are generally shorter than Americans, so why would anyone expect their 16-year-old girls to be the same size as American girls?

3) They just look young. Plenty of girls look far younger than their age ... Just ask a few people in porn who own "teen" sites where the 24-year-old model(s) look 18. Lots of people look younger then their age, but CNN isn't trying to keep them honest.

Of course, they may not be 16 after all, China has used an underage girl before in competition. But really, would anyone even care if they didn't crush the Americans and take the gold?

One of the Chinese girls has a missing tooth where her baby tooth fell out and a regular tooth hasn't grown in yet. 16 year old girls don't have that problem so I would say she's quite a bit younger.

I do think there is something to the fact that the stadium officials made the American girl wait 15 minutes before doing her balance beam act. In football you call a time out before a game deciding field goal to "ice" the kicker, I think they did the same thing here. Plus, I read the American girl was known in those circles to have problems with choking under pressure so the Chinese may have known they had that option if things got close. I wouldn't put that past the Chinese officials nor would I put the fact that they forged the documents to use younger girls which most coaches seem to agree perform better under pressure.

All true but let's be honest, the Chinese aren't the only ones that have cheated in the Olympics. Cheating should practically be it's own event, gold medals and all.

Of course, my arguments were mostly meant to be tongue-in-cheek - yes, clearly they look younger from our western POV. The real point is all these "investigations" the ridiculous news media is getting into are only happening because the Chinese won gold and the Americans didn't. (And if you listen to the NBC's coverage you can pick out many more examples of this type of attitude.)

It's not just the US media. The first person to come right out and say it was Bella Caroli just after the competition. I would think that if he says it, it's probably true.

If they push it too far, they will come out looking like sore losers. I think the girls were underage, but like you said, they should just let it go. Plus, if we piss them off they'll just poison more children's toys and dog food to get back at us.

I lost that particular tooth at 9, they wouldn't stretch it that much... I wouldn't put it past them, but they have millions of girls to choose from. I think that tooth might be just crooked or broken :upsidedow

There is more to the story. A few international newspapers actually found the girls real ages on various websites and publications a couple months back. It wasn't all done by looks, there was some hard evidence to back it up. It also isn't a new claim.

I don't really give a shit about it, but there is no way in hell a couple of those girls were 16. There was one that I doubt was even 14.

It's still pretty silly when you think about it. China is more worried about winning a gold medal in gymnastics than having their own citizens make more than 30 cents a day. Just fucked up priorities if you ask me.

I would imagine that every gymnast, parent, and coach that had worked their ass off for years and years to get to that point, would care. No matter where they were from or how they placed.

I do think they look pretty young, but with their petite stature, it's really hard to tell.

I do have to say that I am swayed in my thoughts that they might be underage by the whole deal of the lip synching girl. To me, that situation was bizzare.

If you got better at gymnastic skills as your body developed, got larger, and increased in age (especially over 16), then I would be in Beijing bringing home the gold.

These were the same girls that were at previous events before the Olympics. Apparently no fuss was made then, so clearly the point is that why the story now - After they won the gold? There was plenty of time for other countries to complain or "investigate" before the Olympics and before they won the gold.

Listen, in my personal opinion, the girls would not have won regardless of the underage Chinese competitors. They just did not do well at the last few events regardless of the underage Chinese girls. I do think 2 of the chinese girls are underage though. If they are 16, I'd be very surprised.

I think it's pretty moot to argue about at this point. There is no way to 100 percent prove they aren't 16. And i am still proud of our American girls, who won silver despite losing one of our best girls in a few events because she hurt her ankle right before the olympics started.

Not that fact alone, but if there were newspapers articles that stated you were 13 and you looked 13, then it would start to raise suspicion. Obviously if there was a smoking gun there would be no discussion.

But I agree there should be no shame on the American side. To have an Olympic medal at 16 years old is pretty damn good.

It makes me laugh how crazy people sometimes get with being number one. If you get a silver medal, it's thought of as a let down, if you are only a one-term President, you are thought of as somewhat of a failure. If you only write one hit song, you are thought of as somewhat of a failure, a one hit wonder.

In reality, achieving any of those things is an enormous accomplishment.
