Darik's Boot 'n' Nuke.

Delete files.

Copy files to hdd to fill all empty space.

Delete files.

Copy files to hdd to fill all empty space.

Repeat until bored.

Self appointed experts may think this is not perfect and definitive, but then again self appointed experts aren;t ever affraid of contradicting fundamental laws of physics.

Depend what's on the hard disk man... I had couple pictures of my ex gf and I wanted make sure she feel some pain. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

I just bought a 'country cottage' (I'm french canadian and not sure about translation) and have a huge fire place outside... anybody experienced to burning an hd?

fluffygrrl 08-13-2008 06:56 PM

Actually, I don't think you have magnets strong enough to destroy a hard drive, esp if manufactured after 1998 or so. At most it will confuse it temporarily.

Hammer works, but only if you actually damage the rolls.

Copy/delete cycles works w/o destroying hdd.

xxweekxx 08-13-2008 06:58 PM

so whats the best way to permanently destroy hdisk?

burn it then toss it into a river? lol

Nookster 08-13-2008 07:02 PM

You MUST completely destroy the disk if you want to "get rid of everything". Simple.
Oh, and just hitting it with a hammer until it comes to pieces will not work. Best way = microwave.

Yes. It completely fry's all circuits...which is your intended outcome.

Did you not read anything above you? Formatting does nothing but prepare the disk for data to be written...it DOES NOT completely remove previous data from the disk. ALL DATA WHICH HAS EVER BEEN ON THAT DISK IS RECOVERABLE. I repeat...ALL DATA!

Download Seatools or WD Diagnostics and use the zero fill feature.

+1 for Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN), but be warned that using something like the Gutmann 35-Pass method can take the better part of an entire day depending on the size of the disk. :2 cents:
