Share your root canal experience

the other day i broke my tooth trying to crack open a pistachio nut. the premolar has a vertical exterior fracture that seems to extend down to the bottom of the root. when i tap my tooth not much happens, but when i tap my tooth at the gum line i lose my vision in a white flash of light. this is likely because the nerve is closer to the surface down there. moverover, ever minute passes with a dull pain.

so, tomorrow it seems likely i will have a root canal. i have never had one before. my excellent dentist referred me to a root canal specialist.

i have had non-impacted wisdom teeth removed and had a major filling done. how does a root canal compare to these past dental events?

can you share your experience so i know what to expect?

oh you poor bastard, I genuinely feel sorry for you, not a good experience... at the end of the day I guess it depends on how well anaesthesist works on you, it didn't work well on me. :(

They suck. The end.

Just had something similar happen. They pulled the tooth instead of root canal. If you have a good dentist, it shouldn't hurt that much no matter what they do. Get the Nitrous and have a dreamy experience:)

It's got to hurt less then getting all your top teeth pulled out in one sitting. Which I did in June, lol.

My experience is... root canals are over-the-top expensive and extremely painful. Just get it pulled.

Turf 08-13-2008 01:48 AM

painless, not much to talk about really and i have had 3 so far...

qxm 08-13-2008 01:51 AM

that shits painful yo... they'll dig through the enamel to the pulp and then pull the nerve... that effectively kills the tooth so they have to fill it up and put a crown......its horrible I tell ya...... get the Nitrous as recommended above and you should be OK...

Here is a live demo :Oh crap:Oh crap

thx for the vid. it is educational.
it still makes me cringe regardless if it's painless.

Myths About Root Canals

Myth #3?A good alternative to root canal treatment is extraction (pulling the tooth).

Truth?Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very best option.

Nothing can completely replace your natural tooth. An artificial tooth can sometimes cause you to avoid certain foods. Keeping your own teeth is important so that you can continue to enjoy the wide variety of foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrient balance in your diet.

Endodontic treatment, along with appropriate restoration, is a cost-effective way to treat teeth with damaged pulp and is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of a bridge or an implant.

Endodontic treatment also has a very high success rate. Many root canal treated teeth last a lifetime.

Placement of a bridge or an implant will require significantly more time in treatment and may result in further procedures to adjacent teeth and supporting tissues.

Millions of healthy endodontically treated teeth serve patients all over the world, years and years after treatment. Those healthy teeth are helping patients chew efficiently, maintain the natural appearance of their smiles and enhance their enjoyment of life. Through endodontic treatment, endodontists and dentists worldwide enable patients to keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.

No way, I have repressed these memories for a reason.

It was walk in the park for me compared to getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Fuck I was useless for a week after getting the wisdom teeth done.

The Duck 08-13-2008 12:40 PM

I hate dentistry.

Brad 08-13-2008 12:42 PM

it's not fun. I had one a few months ago and after three rounds of freezing didn't make do anything I told him to just get it over with. I think the anticipation of pain is worst than the actual pain. So now you are screwed.

StuartD 08-13-2008 12:46 PM

Never had one before... it doesn't sound pleasant :(

v4 media 08-13-2008 01:54 PM

I've had three the only one that hurt was the back molar, its just not a nice feeling when they file the inside of your tooth out.

CurrentlySober 08-13-2008 01:56 PM

I had one and the dentist tried to take a shit in my mouth !

Or, it could have been an hallucination from the gas... Don't know...

pornguy 08-13-2008 02:12 PM

I had two done not long ago with no issues. After the canal, go ahead and get the post and crown.

shekinah 08-13-2008 05:12 PM

that sucks man..the reason why I hate dentistry:(

it is unknown if it can be saved. a look inside my tooth will determine if the crack has entered the root. if it has, then it must be extracted so they say.
