The Serpent & The Rainbow [PICS]

While out on a photography hike earlier in the day, caught shots of both a 'serpent' and a rainbow (near Beaverdams/Deceuw Falls area of Niagara).

Not sure what species of snake it is, though.

Any experts in the crowd?

Looks like a water moccasin in the first pic..the second pic makes it look like a red tail boa by the markings..

Thanks.

Usually I would've left quickly, too - but it was only a few feet away in some underbrush when I startled it...figured no sudden movements was the best policy, heh.

Glad I had the 200mm lens on the cam at the time, all the shots I took were from a healthy distance.

Checkin' Google images, I'm fairly sure its a northern water snake, tho - not a moccasin. But they still pack a good bite apparently.

Same snake, yep. It went into the water just after I spotted it and got a few shots on shore.

Vicious_B 08-13-2008 07:12 AM

Awesome pics. The one of the snake in the water does look like a red tail boa. Ive owned 3 of them. Beautiful and very gentle creatures if you raise them right.

cwd 08-13-2008 07:17 AM

great pictures! Last time I went for a hike all I saw was mud...and a little poison ivy..shit...

qxm 08-13-2008 07:21 AM

sexy pics yo! :) that certainly looks like a boa ....

MakingItPay 08-13-2008 07:21 AM

Snake looks similar to water moccasin, but I believe is a banded water snake.

Banded Water Snake

crockett 08-13-2008 07:25 AM

I don't think the snake is a water moccasin because the head is too small. Most poisonous snakes in the US have bigger heads than the non poisonous ones. At least down here in Florida, not sure about northern snakes.

MakingItPay 08-13-2008 07:48 AM

the Banded Watersnake is a southern snake, so I am not sure that is what it is. Here is a photo:

I cannot believe you had a steady hand to take that pic. I would have been screaming running away in a panic. Holy crap that beast girl killer is HUGE.

pocketkangaroo 08-13-2008 01:01 PM

It looks like a Northern Water Snake. That's way too far north for cottonmouths.

As mentioned above, I wasn't too close - I used a 200mm Nikkor lens with vibration reduction to get the shots. I'm no fan of snakes, either.
