American mercenaries are nothing new. They still have squads, or divisions of them.
My old boss at the phone company was one of them. He was a comm. officer in one of the units. He had some stories and pictures to show us on it.
They were basically sent places, given both U.S. and other counties military gear, but wore no patches for U.S.A. If captured, they would be denied as U.S. military.
A lot of times, they were sent to rebels or "allys" to help with logistics and communications. But they had armed forces as well.
