Hosting question: Should you get a host near where you live?

I mean if you live in NY, does it matter if you use a host who is based in NY or California?
Will the NY one be faster for you? or it doesnt matter?

Unless you're prone to driving down there and handing them a USB keyfob to copy shit to your server, there's absolutely no fucking reason to have your host nearby if they have decent routes. You should care more about the speed for your surfers, than yourself, anyhow.

Im in new england and just checked a host in boston and it is incredibly blazing fast compared to my current host in california. So thought about switching. Most customers are in NY

I.. I don't know how to even answer any further. I figured I'd be nice, but I really don't know.

It's not geocentric. The better the interweb lines to your host, the faster it will be to them. Physical location matters very little in 2008. If you're not paying for decent tier traffic, it's about 95% guaranteed to be Cogent, anyhow.

Most important thing is your hosting provider's routes. It matters how fast your viewers get it. Although, if the majority of your viewers/ members are in one geographic location, then it might make sense to get closer to them. That is what a lot of gamehosting providers do to make sure everything is lightning fast.

For the most part though I would look for a host with the least amount of hops, etc.

Well, if you are only targeting NY users, then it might make some sense to be hosted on the east coast. You might save a few nanoseconds.

Why do you make it so easy to make age jokes? I dislike making age related jokes, and I have no beef with you - but damn it, how can I resist saying "You're the only one here who has to be worried down to the nanosecond."? HOW!?

Apparently you missed the sarcasm. That's okay, it is still early.

There's nothing funny about wasted nanoseconds, or vaporlock.

Sarcastic computer guys. Exactly what I want when making my decision of who to go to for a new host.

You are worried about it too much... if your customer base is in North America, get a North American hosting company with good routes, good equipment, and good service. That is more than enough to suffice.

fris 08-08-2008 10:15 AM

just incase you wanna visit them incase your host is down and want some answers in person and avoid their outsourced support

I agree, I never suggested either was funny.

The point is, there should not be a noticeable difference.
