Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has set the bar high for Gotham City villains, but reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.

"Producers are convinced that the role of The Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction and still make the character his own. And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?" a source said.

They could be joining Angelina Jolie - the actress is reported to be after the role of Catwoman.

The Riddler was played by Jim Carrey in 1995 film Batman Forever and Frank Gorshin in the Sixties television series. As for The Penguin, he was portrayed on the small screen by Burgess Meredith and in 1992 film Batman returns by Danny DeVito.

Plans for the sequel are yet to be announced but it is likely to star Christian Bale reprising his role as The Caped Crusader.

The Dark Knight has smashed box office records in the US, taking $314 million in just 10 days.

There is even talk of it challenging Titanic to become the biggest movie of all time. Titanic took $600 million in the US. The Dark Knight certainly looks set to reach second place in the all-time chart and beat Star Wars, which made $460 million.

They should not even touch in on the same damn crap the previous Batman movies did.
That would mean they do not need a riddler, a penguin, catwoman, nor a fucking boy wonder. That sort of crap is just used to sell merchandising and dilutes the story lines.

There are more than enough villains and plot lines to pull from without going to the same well over and over again.

Philip Seymour Hoffman as the penguin sounds even better! It all around sounds great though, I can see both of of them playing those rolls well. Angelina as Cat Woman though? eh

They'd be smart to never try to cast anyone as the Joker ever again. No one will ever be able to do it better.

Yep. Trust Nolan. He could make an action movie out of SpongeBob and I would pay money to see it on Imax without even seeing a trailer.

Let's hope Nolan doesn't want to include Riddler or Penguin in the next or any other future Batman movie.

Depp could play the riddler. It's all BS though. They already announced the next batman will NOT have the penguin or catwoman.

By the way since Dent turns into 2 face we already know who is the bad guy in the next batman.

Well for instance the Penguin has been routinely been listed as one of the worst Batman villains of all time. Then aside from Catwoman who actually was a decent villain and the Joker who was already done, the rest do not need to be repeated. Though I suppose they could rehash Two-face as well as he was a proper villain.

Would however be nice to see any of the following instead as a small sample.

Black Mask
Poison Ivy (yes done before)
Harley Quinn
Ra's Al Ghul

OK my geekness meter has gone way the fuck up. I just happened to have owned a comic shop for many years and well everyone had these discussions even before the first Batman movie.

I would love to see a Knight Fall movie... have Bane take him out and have the other guy take up the mantle of the Bat and go all nuts.

In the comics that they are attempting to adapt. They are not all super hero films either that get adapted from graphic novels. Is it just that the comic/graphic novel industry spawned off a few generations mytho's. Not sure where you see a lack of creativity in the usage of decades of very hard work that often went very under paid.

Ra's Al Ghul was in Batman Begins!!! I would more like to see Clayface, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Man-Bat... or some bad ass villain we haven't seen before.

I've never seen it, but from everything everyone tells me, spongebob is FUCKED UP. I've seen some of the comedy the voice of spongebob has done. I wouldn't doubt that it would make a killer dark movie.

Bane would be AWESOME in 2 or 3 movies, but not the next one.

I'd also kill to see a proper Superman movie with Doomsday and a faithul storyline.

Jolie would be great as catwoman, but they have to put her on a mandatory "gain 20 pounds diet." She looks like the fucking Crypt Keeper at the moment.

When Batman asked Morgan Freeman's character to modify his suit so that he could move his head, Freeman returned the suit and said that it will protect you from dogs, blah, blah, blah and even CATS!

Could be some foreshadowing.

Depp as Riddler will be great. I'd leave out Catwoman and Penguin though.

Aside from Bane (who shouldn't be in next movie, it's too early) and Harley Quinn (who should have had a cameo in this film in case we never see Joker again) I don't really like any other Batman villains.
