why is LA city hall so fucken calm during earthquake?

Why is everyone so nonchalant and walking around like nothing is going on?
Why are they not ducking under their desks either? I know they are used to it but so am
I and I was scared. Why are they so calm? It's not normal.

I was screaming in my house.

Because LA is a long way away from Chino Hills... To put it in perspective, it would be like people in Vermont worrying about New Hampshire.

bausch 07-29-2008 10:53 PM

I am MORE far way than LA from Chino Hills and I still felt it, it was STRONG. They felt it, they are just "too cool" to act scared.

bausch 07-29-2008 10:56 PM

No, actually I am closer to chino hills, I never knew where it was because I never had to go there and don't care for it, but I just looked on Mapquest and I'm a bit closer. I am sure they can still feel it in LA a lot though.

LOL.. New what? Where the fuck is that?

Meeper 07-29-2008 11:06 PM

I was in Downtown LA when it happened and it rocked the place pretty good. I reacted pretty much the same way as them, realized it was an earthquake and shrugged my shoulders lol

They're too stoned on prozac and claritin to even notice.

Because not everyone is as neurotic as you.

Umm, because nothing major did happen. Did you want them to run around the place screaming ??

Sometimes remaining calm in situations is much safer than hitting the panic buttom. Especially in a room/building full of people...

because there have been so many earthquakes and well, people are used to it.

I take it you're not from Southern Cali?

oh yeah, I live in south Louisiana now (temporary) ... if a hurricane comes, I'll be screaming in my house too! haha

gimme an earthquake over a hurricane anyday

I thank God people don't panic like bausch would. Every time a truck backfired there would be pandemonium.

raven1083 07-30-2008 08:07 AM

don't panic is the best policy in order to survive

Kudles 07-30-2008 11:22 AM

I wish I felt it

It was only a 5.4 after all. No big gaping holes opened up to swallow LA to the depths of hell.

LA City Hall was on Discovery Channel a few months back. They actually lifted the building and installed springs, I believe they are tied into a computer system. This was unprecedented in the States (Japan has accomplished it before). Essentially what occurs is that the springs adjust to the type of shaking / rolling that occurs. No matter what type of vibrations come in, City Hall is set to sway back and forth.

Yesterday, the second roll uplifted the Weg office. This causes it to sway at it's peak in a multitude of directions and once it goes down, it vibrates. At City Hall, watch the light fixtures as they keep a consistent swing, never vibrating. The building will sway back and forth in a pattern using it’s own momentum.

It’s the safest place to be in LA, second likely to the subway center. The restoration project is renound and I doubt that anyone in that meeting wasn’t aware.

I have lived in LA since ‘98. One thing you come to learn about earthquakes is that people whom grew up here are earthquake experts, which is fascinating considering that Pasadena will tell you there is hardly any way to detect the size an earthquake can grow as. That said, when the second roll came in yesterday, if you had no fight-or-flight present, if you had no thoughts of getting to safety, bless your heart. I grew up in Tornado alley, when you hear sirens, you go to safety.

I am of the mindset that when you figure out it isn’t a tremor, it’s time to get the hell to safety. : )

I second that. And I've experienced both.
