Freesites have been and are still probably the most underutilized promo medium around for the time it spends to build and submit them. They have recurring value. SEO people will concur. [hint hint]

That said, we are always updating our hosted freesites which are quality. :)

I have some from more than 4 years ago, that still average about 200 uniques a day and make sales.

No, we just pay someone to update them as a community service.

The SEO value from building classic free sites (warning page, main page, 2 gallery pages, etc) can easily be replicated building other types of sites as well.

Freesites are my bread and butter. I just build them and submit them. You can make some money.
In fact my rebills from the Movie Room are very good. You have to build up the traffic. Don't expect to make great money on a dozen of them.

There is money but you need some time to get sales, not overnight biz
