I'm still using Wordpress 2.3.1, is there any good reason to upgrade to 2.6?
Thanks in advance for your input
|
What's the URL of your sites using 2.3.1?
|
Yes and no.
Upgrading will give you more protection against hackers. I find the latest version 2.6 instable though. I would suggest to look for the version before that one in the wp archives. |

Yeah dude it's time to upgrade, anytime they upgrade wordpress it means they do it to make it better, not worse + fix up security bugs and shit like that. |
i cant remember if their was any exploits, but i would just use htacces to block out everyone but your ip to admin

So you upgrade your Windows everytime they come out with a new patch or service pack or version too? |
Anyone else have any feedback on this?

2.51 seemed really good, if you want to be a little behind cutting edge that would be better than 2.3
I'm on 2.6 for everything now and it is overall working out ok.... I don't like the new image handling stuff now, it was better the way it was in my opinion.... simple is better I think but its sad that it is better to use ftp and html to write a simple post with an image or two in it than to just do it the way you want in the wordpress window :2 cents: |
I have tried everything since 2.2 and am sticking with that. All my plugins work, all themes work. All this security / patches stuff makes me piss my pants laughing. When have you ever had a WP install hacked? Never.
There's nothing much in any release since that has made me change my mind. |
Upgrade is always recommended as newer version include lot of bug fixes and security is better tightener. 2.6 is the best version so far imo. I upgraded all my sites and don't regret it!

upgrade or be defaced by some script kiddie.
Most older versions have exploits all of which you can find on google with in seconds. |

BUT, it was worth it in that case because of the new features like built in tagging and stuff like that. If there's nothing that will benefit me then I don't want to upgrade....that's why I always ask before I do. The security stuff is something I'm gonna have to look into, I'm sure there are other ways to lock it down than to have to upgrade every two weeks. If I spend all of my time upgrading and reinstalling wordpress and finding plugins and themes to work with the new versions I'll never have time to get any real work done. :2 cents: |
i beleive 2.3.1 had an exploit where it redirects all your google traffic to specific sites. Upgrade to 2.5 at least
|
Yes, there is good reason

I went from #2 on google for a highly searched, profitable, ball busting, amazing keyterm :)
To sandboxed. WP was hacked by some russian ringtone co. Fucked me for 4 weeks. lost 3-4k in sales, I'm sure. |

If I had nothing out of the ordinary running on the blogs I'd upgrade for sure. |
dude i had some of my shit hacked due to lax wp upgrades - save yourself the suicidal thoughts and do it as soon as possible ... not joking bros- just do it - it takes a sec and any issues are nothing compared to having your income hijacked by that shit ...

bots are crawling old wp exploits 24-7 - you probably have already been hacked and don't know it - or are insanely lucky -
|
new wp image system is horrible tho ha ...
|
For sure WP Exploits are horror. through this shit they can enter your server and hack whatever, so upgrade ASAP. but as i heared even the newest WP isnt that good protected.

One of my sites were injected with some code in the header, forcing it to crash or something. The page gave an mysql error when I checked it this morning and it appears to have happened Friday night US time (so they get a weekends worth of hack I guess) - that's where the traffic stops since the GA tracking tag weren't being located when people visited. The risk is there, you will get hacked over time I guess. Out of my sites, very very few run on old WP versions - the ones that do, are doing it for a reason. You can use the plugin automatic updates to update your WP blogs, you can set it to do it fully auto and all you need to do is click a button. Or you can do like I did, take the risk and then complain when it happens lol or just fix it. The one I got hit with was easily fixed, but I've seen other people get hit much worse. If you plan on running your sites on old WP versions, I strongly suggest you keep fresh backups at all time - both of your files and your DB's. |

Be warned guys 2.6 is very bad still, lots of bugs. Though the upgrade plugin we came across on there looks cool. |
