thats the downside for design company or group of designers. you can't relay on their portfolio, since they have various designers, old and new recruit, YOU DON"T know who did those nice designs. YOU DON"T know the designer are still there.

also their good designers are always busy, and those bad ones are seems not. how if those bad ones did your site? you suck!

so back in the days, when i'm still renting out a designers, i always go with freelancers. and I MAKE SURE he is the one who did all the stuffs on his porfolio.

i hate seeing nice portfolio but the one who did it are dead long ago.

yeah I feel your pain! designers suck sometimes.. I'm so sick of their empty promises of a date when they will be done and then they tell me it will be done tomorrow

Thats pretty much all the larger design guys do is outsource the shit to Orient and hand you crazy things that make no sense or resemblence to whats "IN" for design or upto date in concept...

i will NEVER EVER again use a design company where I don't know who exactly is doing my design and which designs he/she has done in the company's portfolio and where I have direct communication with the designer not some 'project manager'.

Exactly.. places like Blue Design Studios for example have all kinds of different designers .. they just outsource their work then overcharge YOU for it...

it's a crap shoot wh oyuo get.. Find a real good freelance guy or small group of guys.. then you'll know you'll always get basically the same quality

I worked at an agency here in NYC, and 9 out of 10 pieces of work in their portfolio were done by people who have left the agency.

Your best bet is to deal with the designer/developer themselves. NEVER EVER deal with sales people. From my experience, they will tell you anything you need to hear in order for you to sign off on the work.

I've had that problem as well. or the first design they do for you is awesome and by the 5th one you want to pull your hair out.

I was going to start a thread about this, but you beat me to it. This is the last time i'll ever hire ANY recommended designer or a web design company with a great looking portfolio (reality tends to be different). I've tryed many and all i've learned so far that it's just a waste of money. Funny that i havent used most of the designs i bought from designers or i had to extremely modify it myself to be able to use it. The only reason i havent done it myself is because i prefer to spend my time on doing other things, but fuck it. Oh yeah references tend to SUCK too.

Not saying all of them have been sucky as there are a few out there whom are worth, but MOST of 'm are like 16 old kiddies whom are using MS Paint to create their stuff, or use top notch stuff but dont know how to combine colors.
