Bottom line on Meta Tags
What is the up to date bottom line on Meta Tags? Are they needed, or not needed, to have your site crawled by the major search engines? If they are needed do they need to be on every page, or just on the initial index page?

meta tags for the most part are ignored by the search engines. If you're going to have them at all, just put a description meta on your main page. If you're going to use a keyword meta, all words should match what's already on your page. So it's basically only good for adding synonyms of existing keywords.

from what i have read on search engine boards, besides the title tags, meta tags are becoming more and more useless.
|
meta meta come out come out wherever you are. hehehe
:smokin |
Why are they more and more ignored?
|
Fuck meta tags. I don't use them yet I get top listings in google for good keywords.
|
meta tags still have quite a bit of usefulness left in them guys.... :winkwink:
|
They don't play much use in Google, but Inktomi/Altavista and other older search engines still use them. Don't diss them just because Google doesn't use them in their algorithm.

I use metas to block the smart tag thing...
|
I'd be using them if I were you:2 cents:
I get a lot of traffice from Europe on 1 of my page and it does not come from google and i use Meta's |
I use simple meta's just in case the smaller SE's that use them come around. But as far as ranking on the majors, I get the same results with or without them in the top 20 listings.
