Guns are not banned. Handheld guns generally used for killing people are banned. You can own rifles and shotguns under licenses.

The UK is seriously not a dangerous place to be, as long as you stay away from the rough areas. It is like the USA, you could say it is a fairly safe place - but not if you're in Harlem.

Killing someone with a knife is much more personal than killing someone with a gun. But its sick, people don't get punished enough for their crimes. I use to carry a knife around, for safety, but to be honest, no real point. Only gets you into more shit if you take it out. Lot of morons out there.

"The country is in a mess" do you know what a mess is? Zimbabwe is a mess, Iraq is a mess, large parts of America is a mess, there is very little mess here. 30 drug dealing teens stabbing each other to death a year is not a fucking mess, more than 100 people die from guns EVERY DAY in america, that is just with guns. Brits are so over dramatic and moan non stop. You do realise when the papers says oh no another teen stabbed to death, this same teen has a criminal record as long as your arm and if it wasnt him killed he would only be killing someone else. Granted the odd few get killed who are normal people and dont deserve it but your never gonna have a country without that.

Laws like that only keep guns and knives out of LAW abiding citizens hands. If I wanted to kill somebody I can drive to a ghetto and pickup an unregistered gun easily and dispose of it in a drain pipe, river or ANYWHERE. You simply can't do anything to keep the guns out of the hands of people wanting to commit crimes. You can only pass laws to keep them out of the hands of people wanting to protect themselves.

the #1 reason why this country will NEVER face a ground invasion is because they know we all have guns and most of us know how to shoot them...

I would say the number one reason is because we are a essentially surrounded by water... Mexico and Canada are not going to do anything. Do you really think a trained military is not going to attack simply because Bob has a 9 mm in his nightstand?

Nobody is going to launch a ground invasion on France either... they don't have guns.

We are talking about the likes of 30 fatal stabbings A YEAR. Compared to hundreds of murders PER DAY in america. Yes im telling you we the uk do not have a right to moan (as much as we do). There was an actor from the upcoming HARRY POTTER movie that was stabbed to death earlier this year in London. And then there was a British Heavyweight Boxer who was knifed to death last year... Just shows you how common these knife attacks are. 21 deaths... but over 21,000 actual knife attacks. I wonder how many of those were seriously injured. In any case, it doesn't look good for London. Hope they can somehow curb the problem.

Compare capital cities of other countries to london and violent crime here is right at the bottom.

Never been to the UK, never been to the US ghettos either... so I don't really know much about how really it is there... but... personally I just don't understand and can't agree with violence and crime seen on the street in the developed countries.

I am totally against giving up civil liberties (governments getting more and more data about their citizens, monitoring correspondence etc etc) but at the same time I am totally for increased police patrols and really punishing all these wannabe wiggers or niggas who have too much of free time and start trouble.

Really, I think that in the developed world (US, Canada, EU etc) there shouldn't be ANY places where you just can't feel safe.

Getting stabbed because you don't give someone a cig is really a horrible thing and there should be zero tolerance for such behavior. Criminals should be put in jails for years and prevention at an early level should take place, but I guess the problem is the education, the media, bad parenting and lots of other things.

Well, I don't really deal with the low-class scum (look at my nick :winkwink: ) but I just want to feel safe everywhere.

That's one of the crucial things that should distinguish the modern world from the 3rd world.
You should be safe on the streets in the major cities, even at night.

Well not sure how I sound, perhaps too idealistic. Really, it pisses me off so much to hear about stupidity, violence and cruelty. I don't want to sound old but I wonder often about where the world is going.

Yes I know. But it was quite surprising to hear it when these attacks began to rise in London last year. I didn't say anything in my post that said London was high in comparision. What I said is hopefully it doesn't get too bad, and that they can find a way to prevent from getting worse. I was just sad to hear that because I've been to England several times in my life. It's my guess there hasn't been any significant rise in violent crime but the tabloid press has got hold of it and are blowing it way out of proportion. As the guy said above, us Brits love a good moan and are the first in line when it comes to putting our own country down.

Despite all the previous postings i don't think the UK is in a mess. We, as a society, have got our priorities wrong on certain things. (Living to work for example). But by and large most folk are decent and hardworking

As to knife crime, it's only in the news becasue it's nearly all teenagers stabbing teenagers in London. Anyone who lives north of London will tell you the news media hardly ever focus on issues elsewhere. If it doen't happen in London it doesn't happen at all, and if it does happen in London it's MAJOR news.

Ask Glaswegians about knife crime, they've had it for years but it hardly ever gets mentioned.

Burglars in this country are NOT serving ANY prison time whatsoever.... Because our prisons are too full.

Kids roam the streets and cause all manner of trouble, and the police DO NOTHING... There's nothing they CAN do.... I had bricks thrown at my house. I had a log thrown at my head, that missed by inches... And what did the police do? Fuck all... They have no power... And I live in a decent area. I wasn't allowed to film the kids terrorising my neighbourhood, because *I* could have got into trouble... (police woman told me this on the phone)... And I couldn't dish out any punishment, because again, it'd be me on the chopper.

The kids know their rights. The criminals know their rights. And we live in a country/continent where the criminal seems to have more rights than the victim.

The only thing you can do here when the criminal gives you shit is call the police... and it'll be a special day if they turned up within an hour on a 999 call... Don't say I'm being a fucking drama queen, this is real... And this year.

We moan, because we have lots to moan about... Yes, Britain is STILL great, but it's great because of what we did in the past, not because of the mess it's becoming.

hooliganism has been just about eradicated in England (at least compared to how it used to be), if they want to fight they normally do it a few days before or after the match, normally in a location far from the ground. Eastern and Southern Europe have a much bigger problem with hooligans today than England.

What I dont get is if you kill some one you get sent down for 14 years only do half and then you are out.

Does that not ring alarm bells that someones life is only worth 7 years in jail?
