Forget Gas Prices, What Does Meat Cost Where You're At ?

I went to the local mall grocery shopping and as I walked up to the butcher I was looking at the price boards when I remembered just how stupid expensive good meat was last time I was in the USA.

OK, so the Aussie dollar is at US 97c as at today, so the dollar is comparable.

BUT....

These prices are PER KILOGRAM, NOT POUND, so divide them by 2.2 and you get the price per pound.

:winkwink::winkwink:

And the quality is Delmonicos or Smith & Wollenksy, every single time.

Australia certainly IS the lucky country.

Especially for fat bastards who like eating like me.

A good sized steak from the local butchers is around $16-18. Buying a nice steak in a restaurant is around $44.

We have a lot of local farms that do pork and beef around here. I can still get a good Rib Eye for $6.50 a pound. I bought some boneless country style ribs for the smoker last week and it was $1 a pound. Hamburger is a little over a $1 a pound for the 80% lean (if you buy 5lbs), if you go 93% lean it shoots up to $3.50 a pound.

depends on the grade, when i buy steaks i select usda prime, not sure of the grading system in your country

Damn, never even pay attention. Recently bought a pound of ground beef. All I know is that I got 4 meals out of it. Probably was a good deal considering that.

A gallon of milk though was up to $2.49.

Gosh, it's been months since I bought meat - I usually just eat it when I go out. I think the last flank steak I bought was around $2.99 maybe 3.99 a pound? Strictly a guess. I marinate them for a day then grill them over hardwood coals. Now I want to hit the grocery ;)

Your meat counter is so colorful!!!

goodgirl and I went to a steakhouse in IN a couple weeks ago.

I had lobster and filet mignon. The steak was so tender I noticed I was holding the knife upside down and it was cutting through it with ease.

She had a New York (I think). The cost for the complete meal (appetizers, salads, drinks and 25% tip) was $65.

Moral: it depends on where you are. Last steak and lobster I ordered in Chicago was $100+ just for my dinner.

I rarely buy steaks in restaurants as I buy tenderloins and prime rib/t-bone steaks all the time. average price for a good size steak is about 12 bucks

I come from a very large family, and my dad did not make a lot of money by anyone's description.

I remember him bragging to others that my mother could stretch a pound of hamburger further than anyone he knew (this was long before Hamburger Helper, and 1# would feed 8-10 people).

OTerror 07-15-2008 10:25 AM

Jennyfer 07-15-2008 01:35 PM
