What countries do 'tipping'?

I was thinking about this the other day. Is it a normal thing to tip for services in any other country besides the U.S.?

Sly 07-11-2008 08:54 PM

I think it's primarily a United States thing.

I was reading an article the other day about tourists. Americans seem to be kind of notorious for being bad tourists. Complaining about service, etc.. The article I was reading made an interesting point though. It said that part of the reason we are such bad tourists is because we are used to pretty decent service here, due to competition perhaps, and when we don't get it, we go elsewhere.

I've often heard of foreigners mentioning that we have very good service compared to their countries. Kind of makes you think...

From my experience

Tipping: Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Portugal

No tipping: Spain

AnniKN 07-11-2008 09:50 PM

No tipping in France either, I think most Latin American countries do tipping

a lot of the times the service is better in the US due to the tipping, the better they serve the customer the bigger tip they expect to recieve...I live in Hong Kong and generally there isnt any tipping but there is a 10% service charge added in restaraunts....the waiters dont care as much here because they arnt working for tips....that doesnt mean they dont provide good service...its just that they dont feel it necessary to go beyond what their job requires. You will find some places here dont allow tipping and if you leave a tip for the waiter their manager will ask them to give it back.

tipping 10-15% in Germany in a restaurant is normal

nope, Americans are amongst the top 4 most desired tourists (very recent study) and the Brits are the worst tourists in the World (being drunk 24/7 and doing the most stpid shit)

I used to manage a restaurant/coffee shop in South Africa for 2-3 years, most of the Americans are very easy-going and compared to the white South Africans they are not fussy at all

everybody tips in South Africa too, 10% being the norm.
In 99% of the places the waiters don't get paid at all, they rely only on tips

DutchTeenCash 07-12-2008 05:16 AM

holland: yes

restaurants, getting a haircut, pizza delivery etc

10-15%

I agree, in my travelling and living experince most Americans I encountered were alsways easy to get along with and were always up for a chat....but Ive had some bad experiences with snotty stuck up europeans who think just because they are white and in Asia they deserve to be treated like royalty....

Violetta 07-12-2008 05:49 AM

I hate to tip... But I do it!

that's correct for some services, for example restaurants, taxis, public bathrooms sometimes, hotels ... we rarely tip other services tho

Waiters in France do get a decent salary from their employer; So they don't have to beg for tips to pay their rent like they have to do in some other countries...
Somehow people who depend on tips while being exploited by their boss make me feel sorry for them....

Not to the extent Americans do. A fancy restaurant, yes leave a tip... The UK equivalent of Dennys? No no tip...

But they do try and remember to tip when elsewhere... However its not *that* common..
