i need to start my computer in dos mode to install windows 98 but windows xp pro isn't letting me reboot in dos mode or start up from the disk. how do i do this?

check your cmos. there should be an option that u can turn auto-cd scan on before windows loads. u should put the windows 98 cd in your cdrom and there u go, ur in dos :)

xp doesnt like DOS, remember Windows is trying to be a real GUI like Mac, with its OS running DOS in the background it can never though.

When booting the computer hit f8 a couple times and there is a screen that comes up for dos prompt and safe mode, if you want to put on windows 98 from XP PRo you will need to format the system co go to the bios(del) as soon as the computer turns on and see the boot priority list of devices. ex. cd rom, floppy, drives

make sure floppy is set to the first device to boot off of, then follow the orriginal ored from device 2-3 and other.

when 98 boot disk starts go to "start with cd rom support"

when all the crap is dont loading off the floppy and you are at the a:\ prompt

type, format c:\ , y,,, and wait for completion

then after it is done it will ask for a volume label, just hit enter

a:\ will show up again and type setup
it will do a quick scan of the drives and open the windows 98 installer,.

all done.

hope this is in order and helpful

And your harddisk have to be formatted in FAT (fat16 or fat32) for windows98, or else Win98 cant read the disk

There's a NTFS hack for Win98....

Sambuka 10-22-2002 09:58 AM

goto Start then RUN

then type "msconfig" hit return

Goto boot.ini and it has all the booting up options in there.

I had to boot into safemode one day as the virus I had was an anti - anti virus that killed nortons antivirus and thats how I got into safemode. I couldn't do it with F8. XP didn't seem to like the old F5 or F8 thing, but I hope this works for you.

Talk about hell! I ended up calling tech support and they said everything Kelly's brother said. Ran into some problems where it wouldn't format c right away, had to delete the partition, like mentioned. Almost have it all up and running, just need to install drivers and software.

Thanks guys. Geez Juge, I should have known that!
