Sinus infection remedies?

I get sinus infections all the time due to a deviated septum, but this time its BAD. Does anyone have a good remedy I can try?

atom 07-10-2008 01:19 PM

mace yourself!

seriously though, do a saline rinse up your nose, that should help.

I'm hitting the Afrin pretty hard.

atom 07-10-2008 01:25 PM

hot wet towels on your nose, do this 3-5 times a day.

Take a bag of Chilli's and shake it around so there's some active dust flying around the bag and then breath it in through your nose ...

5 minutes later - have some kleenex handy cause snot will come out of everywhere and your killer sinus headache will be gone :)

neti pot? if you really have a sinusitis you need antibiotics though.

Odie 07-10-2008 01:32 PM

uno 07-10-2008 01:37 PM

Go to the doctor.

The worst pain I've ever had in my life was a sinus infection about 20 years ago. My head was pounding so bad I was crashed on the couch and couldn't move at all for like 18 hours. My future wife went out to get me some over the counter medicine and came back to find the door locked (it wasn't). I didn't hear her pounding on the door and even if I had, probably wouldn't have made it off the couch. I remember being in tears the pain was so bad.

I rarely go to the doctor, but if I feel a sinus infection coming on, I don't fuck around. Thankfully I've only had a couple since then and nothing even CLOSE to that day.

dready 07-10-2008 02:23 PM

Hold your head over a bowl of very hot water and cover yourself with a towel. That will bring some relief. Rinsing your sinuses with saline will help a lot too. Advil is the best thing to kill the pain from the inflamation.

If it's really bad, get some antibiotics.

First, see a doctor. If he agrees, try allergy pills and decongestants. I use over the counter Zyrtec, and the occasional nasal spray. Over the counter nasal spray Afrin works great, but you might also try prescription ones, such as Flonase or Nasonex.

I also hear prescription Singulair pills work well.

Again, I get them all the time, this one is just crazy bad. Usually I ignore them and they go away in a few days or OTC meds help. This time all that is a no-go.

Not working. This feels like someone is driving an ice pick into my sinus cavity above my right eye about half an inch from my nose.

Ugh. I'd give myself a saline rinse, and go see a doctor, then. It's only going to get worse, and you don't want that to get even MORE painful.

camgirlshide 07-10-2008 03:14 PM

if it's dark green you better go to a doctor

ztik 07-10-2008 03:14 PM

I had a really bad one for 3 weeks. Wouldn't go away finally poped some antibiotics, gone within 2 days.

Basher 07-10-2008 03:30 PM

ephedrine is for sinus problems

mynameisjim 07-10-2008 04:02 PM

If it's bad you'll need some antibiotics to clear it up.

I got those all the time in the winter but I found if at the first sign of congestion I use some Afrin and take two sudafeds it usually keeps it from going full blown.

If it's bad right now, a super hot, steamy shower sometimes helps relieve the pressure.

I tried one of those neti pots and they work but it sometimes gets water in your inner ear. At least that's what happened to me. I ended up dizzy and lightheaded for a month. I'll never touch those again.

You can't get that anywhere in the states anymore because of the white trash that turns it into meth. :Oh crap

Yup. Use a neti pot twice a day to help avoid them but if you have one there's not much you can do.

You can try boosting your immune system with tons of vitamin C (5k to 6k milligrams) throughout the day, eating lots of onions, garlic and chili.

payd2purv 07-10-2008 10:58 PM

awwwww Uno gets sinus infections thats cute!

woj 07-10-2008 11:33 PM

Try maybe bromelain?
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/bromelain-000289.htm

"Although not all experts agree, bromelain supplements may help suppress cough, reduce nasal mucus associated with sinusitis, and relieve the swelling and inflammation caused by hay fever. Bromelain is approved by the German Commission E for the treatment of sinus and nasal swelling following ear, nose, and throat surgery or trauma."

I use breathe right strips like thet are going out of style. They help prevent infections.. occasionally, I'll hit some mucinex full force. 1 spray per nostril twice a day.

bloggingseo 07-11-2008 03:30 AM

I know someone who absolutely SWEARS by Nasal Four products for their sinus infections.

tranza 07-11-2008 05:15 AM

You think that is bad, try flying with a sinus infection. During decent you feel like you have a massive brain tumor that is about to explode and the pain in your face is so bad you want to pass out. Screaming is not an option on flights, so you sit there silently and wish for a quick death
