Server setup questions.
Let me start by saying, we donīt need a new hosting deal :)
The question: Is it possiple to maintain a simple web directory structure like this: domain.com/members/movie1/ .. .. domain.com/members/movie999/ if more than 1 harddrive is used for storage, and maybe more than 1 server is needed to store the membersarea. :helpme |
I'm not sure if you can do it like that with multi server. You could do it multi HDD no problem with a stripe or RAID setup. I have no experience with mounting drives over a network though.

One word of advice, put your members area on another Domain name, and if possible put your members area on a different server.
It happen to me before, had a structure like that, and what happen if you have everything on one server (depending on the bandwidth you generate) well let say you are getting like 100 000 hits daily to your tour, well your members will suffer on the speed they will get to teh members area, then you get members that are pissed at the speed they are getting on the site. (retention will be lower in this case) Other way around if you have 100 members at the same time in the members area downloading those big Mpeg that you offer to your members ;) well then it's going to slow down your speed of the tour, so people hitting ur tour will be like (WTF, this is slow i'm not joining this shit) bah |
or you could also do 2 servers and mirror them and do a load Balancing between the 2 of them

you can have a master/slave set up, where you have a master box that the others boxes check the files on, and duplicate whatever's on that server (regularly)... |
