User Charged With Felony For Using Fake Name On MySpace

Recently a user, Lori Drew, was charged with a felony for the heinous crime of pretending to be someone else on the Internet. Using the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Lori was charged for signing up for MySpace using a fake name.

"The access to MySpace was unauthorized because using a fake name violated the terms of service. The information from a "protected computer" was the profiles of other MySpace users. If this is found to be a valid interpretation of the law, it's really quite frightening. If you violate the Terms of Service of a website, you can be charged with hacking. That's an astounding concept. Does this mean that everyone who uses Bugmenot could be prosecuted? Also, this isn't a minor crime, it's a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment per count. In Drew's case she was charged with three counts for accessing MySpace on three different occasions."

That's a good way to reduce chargebacks from when the "kids used the card"
Give them the ultimatum that either they pay up, or their kids will be reported and charged for a felony :2 cents:

Visa will still cave in and give them the money back, and fuck you in the ass for it.

Sounds like bullshit or there has to be more to the story. Who would spend the money to prosecute someone for this?

Ayla_SquareTurtle 07-07-2008 05:42 PM

I can definitely see the potential for problems here, but I really can't muster any sympathy for a 47 year old bitch who plays head games with teens on MySpace and pretends to be a teen boy. I don't think I have to spell out why it's a bad idea for adults to pretend to be teens online.

Has to be something else behind this.. no way would any prosecutor be that fucking stupid to take on a case like that.

DBS.US 07-07-2008 06:47 PM

I can't find the origination of this story. I bet it is a fake. I talked to my buddy at snopes.com, he had not heard about anything about it. He's looking into it.

edit: nevermind already posted

Michaelious 07-07-2008 07:19 PM

I think it should depend on what the person is doing with 'fake access' e.g. to stalk etc

I'm at a loss as to why you think this is fake, there is info all over the web. As I posted above, the case involves a 47 year old woman who impersonated a teen boy on MySpace. I'm not going to type out the full story here, but it involves a suicide and you can find it easily by googling "Lori Drew." Right or wrong, it's not a hoax.
