legalities in very close Domain names?

Just was wondering about the legalities of someone registering a domain name that is very close to another one that is already big and established?

for example, say I own youtube.com, and it is a profitable branded website, could someone come along and register youtub.com and put up a logo of someone in a bathtub, but run it as a video sharing site?

how about dropping an 's' in a plural type domain... like if there was asianguysonblondchicks.com, could someone legally register and run an adult type business on asianguysonblondchick.com?

I believe that you would be okay so long as you were not running a competing website (thus the youtub example would be a bad idea). And assuming that the asianguys example would also be selling the same type of content that would be bad as well. Although I must warn you that I am not a lawyer.
