World Of Warcraft players avoid this scam

Blizzard announced today that they are now taking applications to beta test the new expansion pack. With that has come a rash of phishing scams. Sites such as www.wrathofthelichking.biz.vi are popping up. You put in your username and password and now they have access to your account. A friend of mine signed up, they logged into his account, stole all his gold, sold his gear then changed the guild message to tell people to sign up at that site to beta test. If they get access to your account they could, potentially get access to your credit card as well.

So be warned and don't get scammed.

this has been your official nerd WOW alert.

Entering credentials into a site taht ends with .biz.vi? No, that's not suspicious. lol

Wow, phishing is really getting out of control. Before it was fake bank/cc emails, then it was myspace/facebook, now WOW accounts? Amazing what scammers will do for a buck.

Very informative message and indeed very important news.
I will call for a meeting in our company to see if we should change our business strategy based on this important industry news.
Thank you for the tip :2 cents:

Thanks for the info, but I still can't understand how people can be so naive to trust some .biz.vi site...but greed and brain don't seem to mix well.

this was just the site my buddy fell for. There are many others out there like WOTLK-beta.com and stuff like that. That said, most of the people I know who are regular computer users have no idea what the difference between .biz, .vi and .com are so he just went to the site, saw it looked legit and entered in his information.

Sadly, I think this is the norm. If the phishing scams didn't work, they wouldn't still be happening.

Later,

There's nothing weird with a BETA signup. But when a site like blizzard is hosted on a domain with a suffix as ".biz.vi" you should know that there's something wrong.
But most surfers are idiots and that's both a good and a bad thing.

WoW accounts are best for them because they resell the stolen accounts for legit money.

woj 07-04-2008 08:19 AM

Those phishers are getting smart, for layman it's probably not easy to tell if the url is legit... what they do is make the url:
signup.beta-test.blizzard.com.somesite.biz.vi/signup.html

people see blizzard.com in the url and think the url is legit

tranza 07-04-2008 10:03 AM

Man i can't beliave they are doing this!

payd2purv 07-04-2008 10:08 AM
