Starbucks closing 600 stores in the US!

Starbucks closing 600 US stores, most opened in the last 2 years

SEATTLE (AP) -- Starbucks Corp. said Tuesday it will close 600 company-operated stores in the next year, up dramatically from its previous plan for 100 closures, a sign the coffee shop operator continues to struggle with the faltering U.S. economy and its own rapid expansion.

Seventy percent of the stores slated for closure had opened after the start of 2006, the company said in a statement.

To put it another way, Starbucks is closing 19 percent of all U.S. company-operated stores that opened in the last two years, Chief Financial Officer Pete Bocian said during a conference call.

About 12,000 workers, or 7 percent of Starbucks' global work force, will be affected by the closings, which are expected to take place between late July and the middle of 2009, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil said.

camgirlshide 07-01-2008 04:42 PM

so 3.6% of their locations.
Having 3.6% of your locations of 16K fail doesn't sound too bad.

they aren't cutting down on their lattes - they are buying cheaper ones.
Which seems about equivalent to what is happening in the porn industry

Well, you can always make your own lattes at home . . . . not everyone has that same ability with porn.

CyberHustler 07-01-2008 05:12 PM

Too many Starbucks in NYC...

I know what you're referring to. if you look into it, it seems very apparent those rumors were put out by some banker in europe trying to save his job by deflecting blame for his bank losing a shit ton of money... btw, GM sales were up in June :winkwink:

Sosa 07-01-2008 05:18 PM

now there will only be two on each block instead of 3-4 in some cases lol

you are right, with the grand marquis's serious drinking problem. I was filling up the tank 2 to 3 times a week at 60 bucks a pop. Alot of it were bullshit trips, like going to starbucks daily. Bought groceries, coffee and now we are eating at home and drinking coffee at home. There are probably lots of people like us.

Cradle 07-01-2008 05:20 PM

meh, dont go there anyways... maybe once a year lol

woj 07-01-2008 05:22 PM

people are becoming smart, no one wants to buy $4 coffee when across the street you can get very similar coffee for a buck...

I make better lattes than them anyway. Usually just go there when I am out of town. So, I prefer towns that have them on every corner so I don't have to hunt them down.

A regular cup of coffee isn't $4.

2012 07-01-2008 05:25 PM

i feel sorry for the people that frequented the establishments that are now closing ... where will they go to feel special now? ... sudoku anyone? it's just coffee ... some people have created a lifestyle out of that place

i have to get a machine with a bigger water tank. The one I have you cant steam that much milk with it.

eprater78 07-01-2008 05:38 PM

Personally, I can tell a difference in certain Starbucks coffee flavors and I prefer it over most other coffee. But, I always stick with the same thing which is regular ol' house blend. I'm a lover of dark roasted coffee but to me theirs just isn't very good. For that I like Folger's.

XPays 07-01-2008 05:48 PM

with the amount of stores they have, this is a drop in the bucket. maybe they are only cutting back to one store per block ;-)

d-null 07-01-2008 06:12 PM

love starbucks, they were just getting too many stores where they weren't needed

there are still plenty

hmmm . . . not sure what you are using but all I do is add a little more water than what I need for the coffee.

About half way thru I steam the milk, then put it back on to finish the coffee.

June sales at GM had a still-dramatic drop of about 18 percent.

I like there chai tea lattes, but I wont miss them as trader joe's has chai tea latte in a carton, just add milk, I cant taste the difference and I get at least 6 drinks per carton.

Even mac donalds new coffee tastes better then regular coffee from starbucks imo.

Drake 07-01-2008 06:32 PM

With the prices they charge, saw this coming a mile away.

actually, I was wrong - GM sales exceeded analysts forecasts, but that was still a drop from the month prior. they were merely 'up' from what was predicted. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/Econo...5287218&page=1

as to what 'agenda' you are referring to, I have no idea. I really don't find the need to somehow tie every single event that transpires from espresso sales to automobiles into an election between three credible politicians and some MTV VJ personality who denies his own muslim upbringing.

better luck next time :winkwink:

GetSCORECash 07-01-2008 06:46 PM

I have three new stores open up near me, in recent months. Hope the one by my house doesn't get closed up. It's like night club with the number of people who are up late standing infront of it.

kane 07-01-2008 07:07 PM

I have to wonder how much of this is the slowing economy and how much of it is just that there are too many starbucks. Two years ago the town I live in had zero starbucks. Now there are four of them. Two are in grocery stores, there is one in the parking lot of a grocery store that has a starbucks inside it and the other is in the middle of town. I live in a smaller town and I doubt there are enough people to really support 4 starbucks plus the other 3 coffee places that have opened in the last few years. When I drive by them I never see anyone in them and when I go into the store I rarely see anyone at the counter getting something.

So I think some of this is just overestimating how many stores they really needed.

GAMEFINEST 07-01-2008 07:08 PM

I saw this coming

heymatty 07-01-2008 09:55 PM

There are 3 starbucks in this smallish outdoor mall.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...04678&t=h&z=18

One company owned, next to an Einstein Bagel also serving coffee. One in Target and one in Albertsons.

I think they really fucked their brand in the ass by letting some of the goons at Target etc. represent it. Barnes and Noble was a great idea sure, but grocery store type patnerships are terrible.

heymatty 07-01-2008 09:57 PM

Ignore the map, I suck at teh google.

SifuE 07-01-2008 09:58 PM

Bout time that JEW Company is starting to fail...

96ukssob 07-01-2008 10:08 PM

my vote more coffee beans! best coffee imo

there are two starbucks that opened close to my apt. first they are in the worst locations. hard to get in and out of, second there is a total of 5 parking spaces for the one.

i think people saw the growth of coffee shops along popular areas and tried to make it themselves. starbucks (as well as many other "high brow" cafes) only work IMO where there is a lot of day time traffic.

if you can find a nice sized industrial/business park, put a starbucks there, not beside a bank. there is a chipotle near where i used to rent an office in bev hills. place was ALWAYS packed during the week from business people going for lunch, as well as coffee bean and peets. on the weekend, rarely saw anyone there. thats the problem with these places i think is they just put them in bad locations and attract the wrong crowd.

Iron Fist 07-01-2008 10:11 PM

Hmm I wonder why.... about time they closed some stores - some stores were competing with another Starbucks!

But Ford are doing well ?
Look at the new Flex, fucking huge gas guzzling vehicle, I wonder what stupid shit thought that idea up. Ford sales down 28% for June !!!

It's really a good idea to sell some of the off. There really WERE too many !

Redjellybean 07-02-2008 12:09 AM

Good stuff. I can't stand Starbucks and all those people walking round drinking shit coffee! They are the McDonalds of high street drinks.

The Ghost 07-02-2008 12:44 AM

They have a very powerful brand. I don't drink their coffee but have respect for how they've built an empire from an everyday product. They're made it more than the product, it's an experience and status.

Amazing for something as simple as coffee :)
