Saddest Song Ever - "He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones
He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time As the years went slowly by She still preyed upon his mind He kept her picture on his wall Went half crazy now and then He still loved her through it all Hoping she'd come back again Kept some letters by his bed Dated 1962 He had underlined in red Every single I love you I went to see him just today Oh but I didn't see no tears All dressed up to go away First time I'd seen him smile in years (Chorus) He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today (Spoken) You know she came to see him one last time Oh and we all wondered if she would And it kept running through my mind This time he's over her for good (Repeat Chorus) |
Every time I hear this song it chokes me up.
This is the part that gets me... "He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away" |
Never heard of it, i'll check it out
|
Never heard it either, but those lyrics are killer. Will check it.

Classic song, and yes one of the saddest. Used to love playing this song out back in the day.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" is a great cryin in your beer song and one of my favorite The Possum aka No Show Jones songs along with "The Race is On", "She Thinks I Still Care" and "White Lightning".

Yeah, that one always gets to me. Thankfully I don't hear it that often.

I love good old fashioned shitkicker country
George Jones, Willie Nelson, Hank Snow, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, Ricky Horton, Tom T Hall, etc. I have no problems putting it in rotation alongside SLAYER, Napalm Death, Obituary, etc. |
It's more bittersweet than sad, but another great country tune is Lyle Lovett's "Family Reserve":
When I saw the ambulance Screaming down Main Street I didn't give it a thought But it was my Uncle Eugene He died on October the second 1981 And my Uncle Wilbert They all called him Skinner They said for his younger ways He'd get drunk in the morning And show me the rolls of fifties and hundreds He kept in the glove box of his old gray Impala And we're all gonna be here forever So Mama don't you make such a stir Now put down that camera And come on and join up The last of the family reserve Now my second cousin His name was Callaway He died when he'd barely turned two It was peanut butter and jelly that did it The help she didn't know what to do She just stood there and watched him turn blue And we're all gonna be here forever So Mama don't you make such a stir Just put down that camera And come on and join up The last of the family reserve And my friend Brian Temple He thought he could make it So from the third story he jumped He missed the swimming pool Only by inches And everyone said he was drunk Now there was great Uncle Julius And Aunt Annie Mueller And Mary and Granddaddy Paul And there was Hanna and Ella And Alvin and Alec He owned his own funeral hall And there are more I remember And more I could mention Than words I could write in a song But I feel them watching And I see them laughing And I hear them singing along We're all gonna be here forever So Mama don't you make such a stir Just put down that camera And come on and join up The last of the family reserve Heh -- until looking it up just now, I always thought the one line in the chorus was "put down that candle...." I must admit that I kinda like that better than the actual line. |
