Does your domain privacy really protect you ?

I have noticed alot of registrars who use privacy features often register the domain with full info then quickly switch it to privacy enabled making it basically useless

Is your domain privacy really protecting you ? List your domain.

what do you propose?

Chris 06-29-2008 06:25 AM

would be interested in hearing your method on how you get old info

Ron Bennett 06-29-2008 08:42 AM

First, the biggest weakness of Whois Privacy is that, as another pointed out, most will register the domain under the registrants real name first and then put the privacy on - so there's a window of time in which the real info could be visiable to others.

In addition, if one doesn't renew the whois privacy and/or there's a glitch one's real info will likely come up anyways; many registrars will provide such info upon request under various circumstances with often little to no verification of the request.

However with all that said, Whois Privacy is good for preventing spammers and whois scanners like DomainTools from datamining one's personal info.

nothing tricky i just use domaintools.com , it's just i think many people dont realise your whois history is cached and available to people. Furthermore many people dont realise when they register a domain with certain registrars they initially use your billing contact info for registrar info then change it to privacy almost instantly so you never see your real info exposed but it is.

Dusen 06-29-2008 08:53 AM

I was completely unaware. GoDaddy do things right or wrong?

Dusen 06-29-2008 08:59 AM

Instead of asking I could have simply checked myself. I have a domaintools membership. Looks like they do things 'Right

Is viewing a domains cache history an upgrade at DT, I seem to think it was.

kektex 06-29-2008 10:43 AM

Have you tested moniker domains?
Most of the time I buy the private registration. I would like to know if I'm wasting my money.

gne112 06-29-2008 10:44 AM

i never bothered with it, maybe i should.

Yeah, you need to pay to be able to view the whois history.

Smokey the scariest mother fucker on GFY. You shit-for-brains he's probably got all your personal info and is watching you right now. Or writing a script to do it automatically.

He knows how to remotely turn monitors into giant webcams. I heard he knows how reach thru the internet and can squeeze your heart thru your chest. Like some kind of NetVooDoo shit.
