Dutch marijuana coffee shops brace for smoking ban

This city's famed marijuana bars have weathered many challenges over the years and are still smoking. But now they face an unwelcome blast of fresh air: On July 1, the Netherlands will be one of the last European countries to ban smoking in bars and restaurants in compliance with EU law.

The Health Ministry says the ban will apply to cafes that sell marijuana, known as coffee shops. But this being Holland, which for centuries has experimented with social liberalism, there's a loophole: The ban covers tobacco but not marijuana, which is technically illegal anyway.

But that still leaves coffee shops and their customers in a bind.Dutch and other European marijuana users traditionally smoke pot in fat, cone-shaped joints mixed with tobacco.

"It's the world upside down: In other countries they look for the marijuana in the cigarette. Here they look for the cigarette in the marijuana," said Jason den Enting, manager of coffee shop Dampkring.

I thought that was pretty fucking funny how they (in theory) will face checks to make sure that ONLY dope is being smoked and not the threaded tobacco. Upside down indeedy

Just do what the Spanish did, ban it. Everyone ignored the ban so the government made it optional, so now about 1 in 20 bars is no smoking and empty..

Put up heated coverd patios outside. Thats one way to get around a smoking ban. At least it worked here.

Yeah they smoke like 70% tobacco 30% weed.. I'm a daily smoker and almost always pass on joints rolled with tobacco, they make me cough, and it tastes like shit. Plus here it's still like 85% weed 15% tobacco.. Makes me wonder why they even bother.. All the cig smokers always have a smoke after a joint anyways.. Fuck half of them light their smoke when the joint is ALMOST finished... ;)

Its because Dutch people like a firm, big joint which holds like a cigarette. You cant do that with weed only.

You can grow the same strain marijuana anywhere it and it will be just as good. It doesn't need to be grown in amsterdam.. or bc... or etc..

You're mistaken. :P They can't make their weed better, the dutch seeds are sent around the world anyways, so same genetics. Canada is especially known for high quality stuff, since the laws aren't as crazy here.

Most of the great quality stuff is grown indoors.
