you know you need money to pay for top talent. you need BIG money. So... that means you need sponsors. BUT... you don't have a product to sell yet. what you then need to do is to create an impression that you not only have a great product to sell, but you also add a sense of urgency and let people know that you only have a few spots left and they are going fast (see QVC) so.... you start telling everyone that you are currently in negotiations to bring Elvis Presley back from the dead... you start hinting that he's going to be doing two sets, live with Johnny Cash and let it be known that you are looking for sponsors. but you be casual about it. never act or sound desperate. then you see who bites. you keep trying to sell a product that doesn't exist, hoping that you can generate enough sponsor dollars to then be able to go pay for that big talent. then in the end, you come back with a bunch of drama about negotiations, this guy, that guy, the agents, more negotiations, what Donald Trump had to say about it all but let everyone know that everything is moving forward, great news expected soon yadda yadda yadda... then... when its all said and done.. you have what you have... some has-beens and you have to explain who they are to potential attendees and sponsors who are now scratching their heads, wondering what the fuck just happened and feeling like they just got suckered into trading in their new 2008 lexus for a beat up 1989 camaro in a straight trade. in the end, the final result is nothing more than a reflection of your ability to pre-sell something that never existed in the first place, to people who were skeptical and already realize that poor return on sponsoring events is barely worth the need to be seen as solid, upstanding members of the bro club in the year 2008. |
