Remote Access - Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm in Asia and need to get into my desktop on Los Angeles (where someone is at and can assist if software needs to be installed) to access files.

I've surfed around, seen a few things but not sure what is good and what's not. What is the best for this sort of remote access?

Thanks. :thumbsup

I use www.logmein.com. Works great, you can access and do anything on your computer via your browser remotely.

the problem you will encounter is you need to be at the PC that is going to be accessed remotely to set it up. If you trust the person to instal it on your pc with cc info etc try www.gotomypc.com

So I FIRST have to put it on PC, then it allows access from anywhere, is that right? Or does software have to go on both systems?

Use logmein, they even give you a free 30 day trial. You set it up on the main PC (not hard at all to do, along with a windows password), then all you have to do is have a browser to connect remotely. You go to logmein, enter the first set of login information, select the PC you want to connect to, then enter the windows password for that PC.

I have not found one thing that I could not do remotely. You basically run your home/office PC from the browser of your remote PC. You control that computer so you can use every function it has.

Checking that out too. Thanks!

Signing up now.

I was looking at the other one, but it asked for my CC for the free trial. I hate that.

What OS is on the computer in LA? May just be able to use Remote Desktop which works pretty well. If that's not possible, VNC will do the trick.

logmein.com is awesome, however the free version is limited. If you'd like to use a free VNC proggy try http://www.tightvnc.com

It just goes on the remote pc then you can login from any pc to it.

Hamachi VPN is very straightforward and easy (and SECURE) way to remote access files.

If the desktop in LA is running Vista or XP pro then it already has RDP (remote desktop protocol) installed.

Just get the LA friend to right click on my computer then properties, then remote settings, there is then a remote desktop section - select "allow connections"

On your machine, in start / programs / accessories you should have "remote desktop connection" that's what you run to login to your PC (via your LA place IP address)

If you run a router in LA you need to configure that to route port 3389 to your desktops internal IP address.

Finally, you need to make sure you allow port 3389 to allow traffic on the desktop's firewall software.

I love logmein. And the free version works just fine. No need to pay at all. It doesn't allow file transfers, but since we're in the biz I just upload files to my server or if you don't have a server then just use the Gspace Firefox extension. :thumbsup

I have to vote for gotomypc. Though if you got remote desktop, it's free and it's so much better. G'luck!

If you decided to go the logmein route, here is a coupon I just used which makes it $39.99/year ($30 savings): IQN3-VNCV
