Actually assasin style murders are the absolute hardest to track down, according to the book Mind Hunter (written by one of the pioneers of the FBI's modern Serial killer Profiling)

Just so happens that assasin, strait up shoot them and get the fuck out murders dont tell anyone anything about who is commiting the crime, other than the technical details (They used a gun: CHECK; they shot someone: CHECK; they left: CHECK...you get the idea) with more twisted crimes its very easy for them to profile the type of person who did it, and the more the criminal tries to cover it up, the more evidence he ends up leaving.

Go figure, s/he'll probably get away with it for quite a while, especially since its not illegal by any means to own and/or carry a firearm in the united states (especially a nice sniper rifle, say, a 270 with a high powered scope - not only excellent for long distance assisinations with only an inch difference off the barrell within a mile, but also commonly used for dear hunting...)...so its pretty damn hard to go "I think he's the sniper, he's got a rifle..." considering it could very well be a congressman. (Not that the possibility of the sniper being a member of congress doesn't exist, but its neither likely nor suspected).

I never bought the weekend theory - he looks like he has a flexible schedule:

First Week:

Wed Thur Fri was - wed evening; thur morning and evening; friday 2:30pm

Second Week:

Monday 8:09 am Wed 8:10 pm Fri 9:30 am

Third Week:

Monday 9:15 pm and ??? Sat 9:50 pm

Looks like he does something during business hours, but I don't think we cal nail him down to a schedule yet.

Of course this was the best day to hit - as people were thinking he took off on the weekend. Not like he would HAVE to take off even if he worked on the weekend.

Except for 2:30 pm on friday the 4th - all shootings took place 9:58 am or earlier or 5:20 pm or later.

Ill bet this guy sits there and waits untill he sees a white van drive past... then takes his shot.

Re; the van.. They say they impounded a rental van that he was probably using. So would this guy be dumb enough to rent another white van? Or is he just that cocky?

There is of course a difference between seeing a white van DOING the shooting and a white van AFTER the shooting.

So far - all I have seen on CNN is that people are calling up by the boatload with tag numbers of white vans they see.

It would be incredible if this guy was using a white van still. I don't know how much money he has, but you could at least rent a car or something for like $40 or $60 bucks.

From what I understand - they don't really thik he had rented this truck. They are just checking it out cause a shell casing was "found" inside.

I don't think he is really cocky - that we know of so far. Even if he was he would have to be stupid to get a white van/truck/bicycle.

Okay, I'm coming out of a closet for this one. I worked in law enforcement for 8 years, and codeme couldn't be more correct. If everyone does their jobs perfectly, a lone gunman without an obvious psychopathology (ie. most serial killers, whose psychopathologies invovle extreme, habitual forms of sexual sadism) is very difficult to catch. This is true even with an accurate physical description. Without one, other than a stroke of luck - some street cop pulls him over on a random traffic stop and spots the rifle for instance - its well nigh impossible.

Don't give too much credence to the "white van" yet either. There are white vans everywhere, and its probable that a white van of some sort will be in the immediate vicinity of any shooting in any suburban or metro area simply by chance.

The problem is the nature of the crime scene, or to be more accurate, the fact that there is no immediate crime scene. You're standing in a parking lot and all of a sudden a woman collapses in a pool of blood. Some fractions of a second later, just as your brain is beginning to react to the visual, there is a single, sharp pop. Do you think you'd be able to point out where the pop came from in the minutes following the event?

If you answered yes, you can be sure you have at least some capacity for self deception. :winkwink:

Unless someone gets lucky, this guy could keep at it for a long time with very low probability of capture.

Across the Bay in Palo Alto, they have a set of directional microphones planted around the most crime ridden area's of the city. When a gunshot happens, those mic's can triangulate the position of the shooter with remarkable accuracy almost instantaneously. Even with that sort of thing set up, which isn't going to happen because of the wide geographical area this guy is operating in, he would have at least a couple of minutes to hide his weapon and himself in plain sight, which is easier than you think as long as you blend in, before LE shows up.

All in all, things look pretty grim from a Law Enforcement standpoint at the moment.
