Elevator terror in Vegas!Everyone shits pants!

:eek2It was a terrifying free fall for people inside an elevator at the Paris hotel-casino Friday. It happened around noon.

Fire officials say four people were inside the elevator on the 30th floor when a cable snapped. The elevator dropped roughly fifteen floors before the brake system kicked in and slowly lowered the people inside to the fourteenth.

Officials say once they secured the elevator, crews went through the shaft, cut through the elevator wall and opened the door to get the passengers out. One 60-year-old woman complained of lower back pain, but was treated at the scene. No one else was injured.

DirtyDanza 06-20-2008 09:12 PM

if it fell 14 floors from the 30th

what if it was on the 13th when it started falling ... does the brake take 16 floors to catch?

House on haunted hill remake :)

I would of loved to been on that elevator in Vegas damn. Total life experience and you know damn well the casino will cut them all a fat ass check too since many will have issues with elevators for life, or at very least they damn well know every jury will believe they will.

jeffrey 06-20-2008 11:05 PM

if the cable gives way they are supposed to catch right then and there, shouldn't fall more then 10 feet. Also there are generally 3-6 cables per car too.
Sounds more like the lift motor brake failed. But a snapping cable does make for better news.

Catalyst 06-20-2008 11:09 PM

damn.. I was just at the paris last week

Ron Bennett 06-20-2008 11:11 PM

~150 feet seems a lot.

I know nothing about elevators, but from all the documentaries explaining their safety systems give the imression that the emergency breaks kick in nearly immediately - not 15 stories later, which is frighteningly long - and would have be death if the elevator had been on say the 14th floor instead of the 30th.

I'd love the feeling .. if I know for sure that its gonna stop somehow and not hit the ground lol .. :pimp

May be break system kick time depends on how high elevator is? Like its giving time to elevator system to handle/repair itself ... and If it start falling from 14th floor emergency break system could get in faster.

I dunno, but what I know is elevator engineers must be smart enough to have this in mind. :winkwink:

JFK 06-21-2008 02:24 AM

scary shit:Oh crap:helpme

bobby666 06-21-2008 04:05 AM

that's why i hate elevators

Antonio 06-21-2008 05:30 AM

I think all elevators built the past 10-15 years have great safety precautions built-in, really weird that it went down 15 floors

Nick_Merlot 06-21-2008 06:44 AM

Holy shit! That would be awesome and suck at the same time. 15 fucking floors! My god!

SNL 06-21-2008 07:57 AM

I wish I was on that elevator.

I would threaten to sue and then get a life time upgrade to the penthouse everytime I stayed at the hotel.

evildick 06-21-2008 09:11 AM

I thought this thread was going to be about 4 people stuck in an elevator for a long time that all ended up shitting their pants.

That would be horrible. 4 strangers in an elevator all dropping massive logs in their pants. They would probably suffocate.

jakethedog 06-21-2008 09:14 AM

sue sue sue .. let it sue ...

Persius 06-21-2008 10:20 AM

damn thats scary as shit!

CDSmith 06-21-2008 10:32 AM

Sounds like four people got a whole lot of shit comped by the hotel after that.

And maybe a new pair of underwear each.

BV 06-21-2008 10:43 AM

I was in an elevator on the 60th floor and the cable snapped.

Was in free fall for about 20 seconds it seemed before impact.

I just kept my eye on the floor indicator display and as soon as it got to about the 3rd floor I just jumped up as hard as I could.

I didn't feel feel any impact at all when it hit the bottom.

Everyone else did though but there are huge giant coil springs at the bottom of the shaft so it's not such a "sudden stop".

I read about this technique in one of the Anal Hobbit threads here on GFY.

punker barbie 06-21-2008 11:06 AM

oh man im headed to vegas in a hour

IntenseJerry 06-21-2008 11:24 AM

That happened to me in a plane once... we dropped about 10,000 ft in less than a minute. Scary shit... J

Which proves that where the anal hobbit lives physics do not apply :winkwink:

my and my girlfriend were in an elevator recently and we traveled to the lobby from the 28th floor...the doors didnt open and we started going up

nothing was pressed and this was one of those fast elevators :\

then we got to around the 16-17th floor, and it started dropping again...

i pressed the emergency button and we just happened to be at the lobby and the doors opened

scary shit

Nookster 06-21-2008 01:52 PM

You know, the thought always goes through my head at some point during my elevator rides...but man, to hear that it actually happened...and probably in one of the exact elevators which I had the thought in...wow. Fuck Paris! LOL

DavieVegas 06-21-2008 02:19 PM

WOW! That sounds scary. I was just their last weekend, staying at Paris, and at the 33rd floor.:(

ya i thought that later too.usually elevators prolly have pretty redundant safety functions.but you never know?i do know the guys that work on that shit get paid fucking bank!

Which is about the worst thing to do - in free-fall, gravity is in control - jumping up and down will make little to no difference.

A better approach is lay (face-down I think is better, but not certain) on the floor so as to better disperse the energy released upon impact throughout the body.

Ron
