Had to have emergency landing on a flight today due to engine failure..
 

I didn't think it was very serious until the stewardess started crying.. Then it got a bit scary.. We were only 15 minutes into the flight. Anyone ever have this happen?

Ugh that sounds horrible. That's why I knock myself out with NyQuil when I fly. If I'm gonna go out I'd rather be asleep.

My real job is with an airline operations department. Engine failures are pretty rare but I can assure you they are no big deal. The pilots train for it and the flights are planned over routes that ensure they will be able to clear all terrain by at least 1000' (plenty of separation) but usually more. A fully loaded B757 can take off pretty close to max take off weight and never hit any part of the Rocky Mountains over the USA.
