Precisely. Watch for news from the US Supreme Court soon. They recently heard arguments on a case that challenges the automatic 20 year extensions of copyright protections.
Maybe someone in the RIAA will realize that locking our creative works away behind every expanding copyright terms only serves to hurt their business. If all the major blues singers had copyrighted their works to death would we have gotten Clapton, the Who, the Stones, Zepplin? Wasn't rap seen as much more inventive and dynamic in its early years when sampling was done freely?
Copyright stifles innovation, which is why our founding fathers only allowed its limited application, not the travesty that we have today. Madison and Jefferson noted that copyright law was needed to ENCOURAGE artists to PRODUCE MORE WORKS not necessarily to turn them into income heirlooms that span generations.
