Precisely. Watch for news from the US Supreme Court soon. They recently heard arguments on a case that challenges the automatic 20 year extensions of copyright protections.

Maybe someone in the RIAA will realize that locking our creative works away behind every expanding copyright terms only serves to hurt their business. If all the major blues singers had copyrighted their works to death would we have gotten Clapton, the Who, the Stones, Zepplin? Wasn't rap seen as much more inventive and dynamic in its early years when sampling was done freely?

Copyright stifles innovation, which is why our founding fathers only allowed its limited application, not the travesty that we have today. Madison and Jefferson noted that copyright law was needed to ENCOURAGE artists to PRODUCE MORE WORKS not necessarily to turn them into income heirlooms that span generations.

Yeah right. Do Indian courts bother to protect American copyright holders? I doubt it. Irony oh the Irony!

I remember when Dr. Dre held a press conference because his record company generated a list of users that d/l'ed unlicensed copies of his songs from Napster. I guess he forgot that rap was born from "sampling" [unauthorized] James Brown riffs.

Very good point. For the longest time, Indian law seriously fucks over US Pharmaceutical companies' patent rights. Indian chose to ignore them. Apparently, this has changed. Then again, enforcement is another issue altogether :Graucho

Don't get scared of the high dollar demands of these lawsuits. A couple of years back, someone sued my firm for trademark infrigment/dilution, tradedress violation, etc etc. He was asking for 2 million. My lawyer talked to the piker and he walked away with a $300 settlement. Either that or get pounded for malicious prosecution.

Thanks. It has no advertising and is really informative place to discuss current events with other intelligent, funny, and witty individuals. Definitely one of the best kept secrets on the Web.

Dr. Dre got into some flack a couple of years back with LucasFilm. Apparently he sampled [unauthorized] a trademark sound from THX -- the sound system for movie houses. He sampled the "test" sound for THX. :thumbsup
