The Republican Party is really good at marketing, plain and simple. While you may not agree with their views, they know how suck people in. They have an army of sorts behind them that will do and say whatever they are told (ditto heads, etc).

They've fed on "patriotism" and "religion" to build a huge base. They've told these people that those issues are more important than anything else. Not to mention, they have an incredible set of mouthpieces to get the message out. Take the Richard Clarke incident a few years ago where he basically showed everyone how clueless Bush was. Every single conservative talk show and blog read from the same exact talking points in hours. It's a great force in getting a message out to their supporters who in turn will repeat those talking points like sheep. You can find a few on this board who will post a talking point. You ask them to elaborate on it and they disappear from the thread (or until they are told how to answer the question by a blog/talk show).

But Democrats aren't much better. They've convinced people that they actually care about "the people". That they can save everyone's problems from the big bad wolf that's called life. They are different though, as they tend to be more independent but passionate. Someone used to say "Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line".

In the end, both sides convince a segment of the population to vote for them who really shouldn't. Truth is both sides suck. Both sides don't give a shit about you. They would gut us alive for an extra vote. But there will always be people willing to believe that these guys are somehow in their corner.

Yeah, its just a trip. Especially since I've watched these checkers get stripped of their benefits... cut wages ... hours etc. Unions going to crap. I think this lady was brain dead. If you don't like Bush, and you are just a little "peeved" about the price of gas. You must be a democrat ...

That's how people are taught now. It's about being on a team. If you aren't on ours, you must be on theirs. There is no independent thinking. No working together, no negotiating and compromising.

Well if you were making $5.15 an hour on July 23 2007 and on July 24 2009 you are guaranteed to make $7.25 an hour I suspect you feel they did quite a bit.

Best post I've read on gfy in a long time. The only thing I would disagree with is that, as a Democrat, I know a party will not be able to fix anyone's problems by waving a magic wand. At this point it's all about changing the course of politics in the White House.

I read the book "What's the Matter With Kansas"... it does a great job of explaining how all the working class people repeatedly vote against their own self interests. These people don't ever have a prayer of ever getting ahead in life but they do have jesus.

Both parties? I didn't know the Bush was democrat, too.

All kidding aside, does anyone think that the Bush family cares at all that their last name has been tarnished and will despised for generations to come? Just horrible.

Yep having guns, abortion banned, gays back in the closet, evolution out of school and creationism and prayer in school is more important. And then they still wonder why they can get a good paying job or affordable health care.

I was saying things in a joking way "the bush tax" ha ha... she was sort of offended?
..and then I said ... Gas was at like 1.28 when Bush came into office. I just paid 4.59 ... she kind of paused and said " I don't talk about politics and religion"...
what tripped me out to was the girl behind me in line ( that I stereotyped as snobby bad bad ) ... I turn around and shes got a big shit eating grin on her face telling me "right on !" so someone agreed with me in line

No they dont. But what scares me is Obama is going to continue a lot of bush's polices. But people will say thats alright because Obama "will change some things" about the polices. :disgust

Just read this review on amazong about that book:

Quote:

It's very interesting to see the book's detractors on this forum, many of whom have clearly not read it, saying *exactly* the things Frank predicts they will, as if from a familiar, shopworn script.

I agree with the reviewer who said that the key to this problem is that many of these voters have been convinced that social issues are more important than economic ones. Contrary to what others have insinuated, it's not that these individuals disagree with progressives on economic issues, but that they are goaded into thinking that whether they are able to own an AK-47 is more important than whether they will be able to afford a life-saving operation for their sick child. A healthy, well-educated child will grow up empowered and less likely to want or need that AK-47, and that's the connection that is critical, but difficult, to make.

Frank implies the answer to this problem while not tackling it explicitly. It is combatting the anti-intellectual, anti- "elitist" rhetoric, repeated again and again and drummed into the brain, that soon overshadows everything else. We can see it aped right here in this forum, by people who think that living in the Northeast or buying a hybrid car automatically makes you an elite, while the true elites undermine others' ability to make it on a level playing field and then laugh all the way to the bank. It is not about big vs. small government, it is about government (of whatever size) privileging the haves at the expense of the have nots.

I think I'm gonna order it.

If Obama continues Bush's policies and things dont get at least somewhat better in a few years, you and everyone else can look forward to another 8 or maybe 12 years of Republicans in office.

I don't like either one.

When you make propaganda type statements ( they hate us for our freedom )

OR

CHANGE ... when you're not actually specifying what exactly the CHANGE is. ( I'm about CHANGE ) ... anyway sorry you don't get it.:upsidedow

So ... MelonHead at the water cooler says: "I'm with bush because ( THEY HATE US FOR OUR FREEDOM ! )

Seems similiar to me to: "I'm with Obama because he's going to bring about CHANGE " ..

get it? maybe not my bad:upsidedow

Yeah I get it, good elaboration.

Flow 06-16-2008 08:41 PM

I use to be a pretty hard core Democrat and I often to listened to Rush Limbaugh just to get my blood boiling. But the more I listened, the more I found myself agreeing with him. I still can't come close to calling myself a republican but I don't openly admit being a (and defending the) democrat(s). One the other hand, I love watching Keith Obermann at night too to get a balanced supply of both sides. I just wish more people were like me in that they are not so one sided. People need to wake up on both sides of the fence.

For example, the Christian Coalition needs to realize that no matter what happens, abortion is here to stay. Not saying one side of the argument is right or wrong, just the facts. If you can't get it banned with a Republican President who appointed two SC Justices and a Republican Congress, it is not going to ever happen.

Conversely, the poor/black people need to realize that the Democrats are never going to "fix" things for them. They will talk up a big storm but when push comes to shove, they could give two shits about you after they are in office.

It's great that both candidates are promoting "change" but does anybody really think that either candidate is going to change anything. The only real change will come when we impose term limits on Senators and House members (say two terms and you are gone - maybe let a House member run for the Senate - maybe not). Then and only then maybe the focus will not be voting 85-95% with their party President so he/she can keep getting re-elected. Nothing makes me sicker than when a vote comes out and it is right down party lines - give me a break.

As a recovering Democrat, these are the things I have learned:

1) Global Warming is in no way man made but rather part of the cycle of the Earth.

2) The reason Gas is so expensive is because the Democrat/Environmental wacko's will not let us drill for oil anywhere and are fighting hard to eliminate the places we can drill for oil all in the name of Global Warming. Also, oil speculators are why oil is so expensive. If congress announced tomorrow that we will be able to drill for oil in ANWR the price of a barrel of oil would drop 30%.

3) Neither party cares for their voting base - they say whatever it takes to get elected/re-elected then when you can't do what you promised just blame it on the other party and promise, that if you are re-elected you will try even harder to get those things done that you will never be able to get done.

I could write a book so I will stop.

FACT: CO2 and methane are greenhouses gases. This can not be disputed.

FACT: humans are putting in more CO2 and methane in the atmosphere. Another undisputed fact.

Even a simpleton can draw the conclusion that man is contributing to global warming.

I mean geez 2+2=4 and 3+3=6 yet somehow 2+3 does not = 5? whatever

What sources do you have for this?

From what I understand, it's going to happen sooner or later, but humans are definitely speeding up the process.

No not at all, I tend to be a pack rat. So to break my clutter habit if its not a tech book, I give it away or throw it out. My family are mostly right wing so no one would want to borrow it. When I go downstairs I will look if I still have it.

Good man. It's an excellent read. A bit redundant at times but there are so many "aha" moments throughout the book that if you are anything like me you'll be torn between shaking your head in utter disbelief or sticking your head out the window and screaming many many times.

The fact is there is no global warming !

You can't prove it because it's not a fact.

Average earth temps have been going down for 10 years and this is a fact so
produce your facts that we have global warming ?

You can't because it isn't happening !

I don't follow the global warming issue much, but I thought it was pretty well documented that the Earth was warming. The argument was more about why it was. I admit that I mostly have only read about the stuff through NASA, but they seem to be strongly in favor of the belief that the planet is heating up.

http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/loo...arth_warm.html

Just one of many pages on their site.

kane 06-16-2008 11:27 PM

Okay, I will probably get jumped and called an Obama lover but he did make a good point that this thread illustrates perfectly. The republicans called him out when he was at a fund raising rally and said to the crowd that many people in the middle class don't vote for a candidate because of their economic policy because they feel that neither party will do anything worth a damn for them so they cling to things like god and guns that have an impact in their lives. He was blasted for saying it, but it is true. Many people assume they will get raped finacially by either party and that neither party has their best interest in mind so they tend to vote for things that they can control and that they will see tangible results from. So if they are pro life and pro gun they vote for republicans. If they are for gay marrige and legal weed, they vote democrat.

The republicans have done a masterful job of convincing poor white people that the democrats will take away their guns, close all churches and force them to abort their babies. It really amazes me to see it.

they have also done a brilliant job of making the world liberal a dirty word. They can slam the democrats all day long and call them liberals, but if the democrats call the republican zealots that is somehow off limits because it is making fun of the baby Jesus.

uh...not so much.

It is pretty much accepted by just about every legit scientific group that the earth is warming. They say this is something that has happened in the past long before we were any real threat to the planet. The question they have is what we are doing ( with pollution, ozone layer, ect.) causing it to heat up more than it would normally do on its own.
